Kwanzaaisveryunusualbecauseitwasstartedbyoneman.In1966,anAmericannamedMaulanaKarengawantedaholidayforAfrican-Americanstohonortheircultureandtraditions.SoheusedwordsandcustomsfromAfricatocreateanewcelebration.HetookthenameKwanzaafromthewordsfor"firstfruits"inSwahili,anAfricanlanguage.Atfirst,afewAmericanfamilieshadsmallcelebrationsathome.NowtherearealsoKwanzaaeventsinschoolsandpublicplaces,andKwanzaahasspreadtoothercountrieslikeCanadaandJamaica.
ThemainsymbolofKwanzaaisacandleholderwithsevencandles,oneforeachoftheprinciplesofKwanzaa.Eachnight,afamilymemberlightsoneofthecandlesandtalksabouttheideaitrepresents:

Withineachpackofupt020adultsandpups,onlythedominantmaleandfemalebreed.Theremaininganimalshelpraisethepups,cooperatingtohuntpreyanddefendthekillfromothercarnivores.
Becausepupscan'tkeepuponahunt,largepacksleaveanadultbehindtoprotectthem'frompredators,whichincludelionsandhyenas.Butleavingababysitteralsocarriescosts.AIsmallerhuntingpartyislessabletotacklelargepreyandtodefendthekill.Thereisalsoonelessstomachinwhichtocarryfoodbacktotheden,andonemoremouthtofeedwhentheygetthere.
Courchmpinvestigatedthisawkwardtrade-offbymodellinghowthecostsofababysitterchangewithdesingpacksize.Thisshowedthatpacksofmorethanfiveadultsshouldbeabletofeedallthepupsandstillspareababysitter.Butwithsmallerpacks,eitherthehuntingorthebabysittingsuffers,ortheanimalshavetocompensatebyincreasingthenumberofhuntingursions一whichitselfcarriesacosttothepack.

狗的两难境地
