Abstract
Radiofrequencyidentification(RFID)hasbeenidentifiedasoneofthetengreatestcontributorytechnologiesofthe21stcentury.Thistechnologyhasfoundarapidlygrowingmarket,withglobalsalesexpectedtotopUS$7billionby2008.AnincreasingvarietyofenterprisesareemployingRFIDtoimprovetheirefficiencyofoperationsandtogainacompetitiveadvantage.ToshedlightonRFIDtrends,andcontributions,ahistoricalreviewandbibliometricanalysisareincludedinthisresearch.ThebibliometricanalyticaltechniquewasusedtoexaminethistopicinSCIjournalsfrom1991throughNovemberof2005.Also,ahistoricalreviewmethodwasusedtoanalyzeRFIDinnovation,adoptionbyorganizations,andmarketdiffusion.Fromtheanalysisofthestudy'sfindings,supplychainmanagement(SCM),healthindustry,andprivacyissuesemergeasthemajortrendsinRFID.Also,thecontributionsoftheRFIDindustryandforecastsoftechnologicaltrendswerealsoanalyzed,concludingthatRFIDwillbemoreubiquitouslydiffusedandassimilatedintoourdailylivesinthenearfuture.

1.Introduction
Theadvantageofradiofrequencyidentification(RFID)tagsisthattheyuseamemorystoragedevicetostoreacertainamountofdatasuchastheproductidentificationnumber,price,cost,manufacturedate,location,andinventoryonhand.Thisinformationcanquicklybereadbyawirelessscanner,soRFIDcanprocesslargevolumesofmultipledatasetsatthesametimeandimproveefficiencyofoperationsbyusingidentificationtagstoaccuratelymonitorprocessesfortime,placeandperson.Thistechnologyhasbeenadoptedbyanddiffusedintoavarietyofenterprisestoachievecost-savingsandincreasedefficiency.ManybusinessenterprisesandthehealthindustryareapplyingtheadvantagesofRFIDtoexperimentalprojectstoimproveoperationalefficiencyandtogainacompetitiveadvantage(BilgeandOzkarahan,2004).RFIDhasbeenidentifiedasoneofthetengreatestcontributorytechnologiesofthe21stcentury.
Manyinformationsystemsareold,donotmeetexistingdemands,andwillsoonbecomeobsolete.Therefore,technologyisevolvingonanalmostdailybasisandmanagersmustcontinuouslylookfornewwaystoutilizeresources(Kodama,2005).Therefore,itisanticipatedthatitwillbecomeincreasinglyimportantfororganizationstocreatenewwaysofthinkingandjobprocessing(CarayannisaandColeman,2005).Organizationsarenotonlyinvestinginknowledgecapitalandinformationtechnology(IT)toimprovetheiroperationalweaknesses(Macpherson,2005),butmanagersarealsotryingtoresolvesequentialoperationalcrises.Theyaredevotingresourcesandknowledgetoreconfiguringandcreatinginnovativenewstructuresandsystemsinordertoovercomethecrises(Li,2005),pursuemoreefficientoperations(Mundayetal.,2005),andgainaneconomicadvantage(Szántó,2005).Therefore,organizationsareintegratinglearningandteamworkcohesionwithinnovativetechnologiestoadapttothechangingneedsofthebusinessenvironment(LlorénsMontesetal.,2005).Creativityandinnovationareleadingcustomersintonewexperiencesandcreatingnewneeds(Rose-Anderssenetal.,2005).Thus,tosurvive,organizationsarecountingontheintegrationofinnovativetechnologieswithbusinessmanagementprocesses(Kumaretal.,2005).
Enterprisesareapplyingadvancedinformationsystemstostrengthenmanagerialabilitytoenhanceorganizationalchangeandgrowthforbetteroperations(Lin,1991).Hospitaladministratorsareawarethatusingnewtechnologiesisessentialtosurvivingandsucceedinginthecompetitiveheathcareenvironment(Uslayetal.,2004).Therefore,thehealthcareindustryisalsobeginningtoemployRFIDtosolveoperationproblemssuchasfightingdrugcounterfeiting(Koleszar,2004)andtrackingbloodproductsfromdonortopatient,andareapplyingnewinnovativesystemsandmodelstomeetknowledgeandeconomicdemands(Cooke,2004).HospitalsareadoptingRFIDtagstopreventmedicalerrorsbyensuringthedeliveryofcorrectmedicinedosagestopatients(Cline,2004).TheUSFoodandDrugAdministrationexpectsdrugmakerstohaveRFIDtrackinginplaceby2007fornearlyallpharmaceuticalstocontrolcounterfeiting(Gebhart,2004),anditiseventestingthetechnologyonseveraltypesofviruses.ThereareRFID-enabledresourceandworkflowmanagementsolutionsbeingdesignedtooptimizeassetutilization,reduceoperatingcosts,andimprovecarequalityinthehealthcareindustry(KohnandHenderson,2004),andforavarietyofothermedicalapplications(Costlow,2004).HospitalsareutilizingRFIDfortrackinginjectionIVbags,bloodbags,cancermedicine,andwoundedsoldiersandtheirtreatment.
Inthispaper,weexploredRFIDtechnologicaltrendsandforecastsbymeansofbibliometricandhistoricalreviewsfrom1991throughNovember,2005toelucidatetheRFIDtechnologytrendsinadoptingenterprises,contributionsthatRFIDismaking,andforecastsforRFIDgrowth.
2.Materialandmethod
AlldocumentsusedinthisstudywereaccessedfromthedatabaseoftheScienceCitationIndex(SCI),obtainedbysubscriptionfromtheISI,WebofScience,Philadelphia,PA,USA.Inthisstudy,weonlydiscussthepaperspublishedintheperiodbeginning1991becausetherewerelessdataregardingRFIDpriortothatyear.
ToshedlightonRFIDtrendsandcontributions,bothabibliometricanalysisandahistoricalreviewwereconductedinthisresearch.Forthebibliometricanalysis,theSCIwassystematicallysearchedforRFID-relatedmaterialspublishedfrom1991throughNovember,2005.Selecteddocumentsincluded“RFID”or“radiofrequencyidentification”inthetitle,abstract,orkeywords.Analyzedparametersincludedauthorship,patternsofinternationalcollaboration,journal,language,documenttype,researchaddress,numberoftimescited,andreprintauthor'saddress.CitationanalysiswasbasedprimarilyontheimpactfactorasdefinedbytheJournalCitationReports(JCR)andonCitationsPerPublications(CPP),whichareusedtoassesstheimpactofajournalrelativetotheentirefieldandisdefinedastheratioofthenumberofcitationsthepublicationhasreceivedtothelengthoftimesincepublication.Ahistoricalreviewwasalsoperformed.Thehistoricalmethodproposesthathistoricalphenomenacanberichandcomplexandthatwecangainabetterunderstandingbyreviewingandinvestigatingthetime(s),place(s)andcontext(s)inwhicheventsoccuranddevelop.ThehistoricalmethodwasemployedininvestigatingtheinitiationanddevelopmentofRFIDasdocumentedinpublicationsintheSCIfrom1991toNovember,2005.
Foralongitudinalliteraturereview,weemployedbibliometricandhistoricalreviewmethodstoexploreRFIDtechnologicaltrends,andbasedonthisreview,weforecastpossiblefuturedevelopments.
3.Resultsanddiscussion
3.1.RFIDhistoricalanalysis
Thekeywords“RFID”or“radiofrequencyidentification”wereusedtosearchSCIentriesfrom1991to2005(updatedDecember16,2005).TheRFIDSCIarticledistributionstatuswasusedfortrendanalysis.Asdetailedbelow,all316papersfoundinthesearchwereanalyzed.

Table1showsthedistributionofpublicationsbycountryandterritory.TheUS,Japan,Germany,Switzerland,SouthKorea,Canada,theUKandFinlandwerethetopeightcountriespublishingRFIDarticles.Listingpublicationsbyinstitutionname,Table1showsthattheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,UniversityofWashington,andAgriculture&AgricultureFood,Canada,arethetopthreeRFIDresearchinstitutions.
