Therearevariousreasonswhyitmightbeconsideredbeneficialtoallowpeopletobepaidextremelyhighsalaries.Ifcompaniesofferexcellentpaypackages,theycanattractthemosttalentedpeopleintheirfieldstoworkforthem.Forexample,technologycompanieslikeGoogleareabletoemploythebestprogrammersbecauseofthehugesumsthattheyarewillingtopay.Furthermore,thesewell-paidemployeesarelikelytobehighlymotivatedtoworkhardandthereforedrivetheirbusinessessuccessfully.Intheory,thisshouldresultinathrivingeconomyandincreasedtaxrevenues,whichmeansthatpayinghighsalariesbenefitseveryone.
However,Iagreewiththosewhoarguethatthereshouldbeamaximumwage.Byintroducingalimitonearnings,thepay-gapbetweenbossesandemployeescanbereduced.Currently,thedifferencebetweennormalandtopsalariesishuge,andthiscandemotivateworkerswhofeelthatthesituationisunfair.Withlowerexecutivesalariesandhigherminimumwages,everybodywillbebetteroff.Onepossibleconsequenceofgreaterequalitycouldbethatpovertyandcrimeratesfallbecausethegeneralpopulationwillexperienceanimprovedstandardofliving.

Ifinsteadoftakingtheabovemeasureswesimplytrytolivewithclimatechange,Ibelievethattheconsequenceswillbedisastrous.Togivejustoneexample,Iamnotoptimisticthatwewouldbeabletocopewithevenasmallriseinsealevels.Millionsofpeoplewouldbedisplacedbyflooding,particularlyincountriesthatdonothavethemeanstosafeguardlow-lyingareas.Thesepeoplewouldlosetheirhomesandtheirjobs,andtheywouldbeforcedtomigratetonearbycitiesorperhapstoothercountries.Thepotentialforhumansufferingwouldbehuge,anditislikelythatwewouldseeoutbreaksofdiseaseandfamine,aswellasincreasedhomelessnessandpoverty.
