Livingwithparentsedgesoutotherlivingarrangementsfor18-to34-year-olds
A)Broaddemographic(人口的)shiftsismaritalstatus,educationalattainment
andemploymenthavetransformedthewayyoungadultsintheU.S.areliving,
andanewPewResearchCenteranalysishighlightstheimplicationsofthese
changesforthemostbasicelementoftheirlives—wheretheycallhome.In
2014,forthefirsttimeinmorethan130years,adultsages18to34were
slightlymorelikelytobelivingintheirparents’homethantheyweretobeliving
withaspouseorpartnerintheirownhousehold.
B)Thisturnofeventsisfueledprimarilybythedramaticdropintheshareof
youngAmericanswhoarechoosingtosettledownromanticallybeforeage35.
Datingbackto1880,themostcommonlivingarrangementamongyoungadultshasbeenlivingwitharomanticpartner,whetheraspouseora
significantother.Thistypeofarrangementpeakedaround1960,when62%ofthenation’s-t1o834-year-oldswerelivingwithaspouseorpartnerintheirown
household,andonlyone-in-fivewerelivingwiththeirparents.
C)By2014,31.6%ofyoungadultswerelivingwithaspouseorpartnerintheirownhousehold,belowthesharelivinginthehomeoftheirparent(s)(32.1%).

menages18to34,livingathomewithmomand/ordadhasbeenthe
dominantlivingarrangementsince2009,In2014,28%ofyoungmenwere
livingwithaspouseofpartnerintheirownhome,while35%werelivinginthe
homeoftheirparent(s).Youngwomen,however,arestillmorelikelytobe
livingwithaspouseofromanticpartner(35%)thantheyaretobelivingwith
theirparent(s)(29%).
F)In2014,moreyoungwomen(16%)thanyoungmen(13%)wereheadingup
ahouseholdwithoutaspouseorparther.Thisismainlybecausewomenare
morelikelythanmentobesigleparentslivingwiththeirchildren.Fortheirpart,
youngmen(25%)aremorelikelythanyoungwomen(19%)tobelivinginthe
homeofanotherfamilymember,anon-relativeorinsometypeofgroup
quarters.
G)Avarietyoffactorscontributetothelong-runincreaseintheshareofyoung.Adultslivingwiththeparents.Thefirstinthepostponementof,ifnotretreat

contributedtothegrowingshareofyoungadultswhoarelivinginthehomeof
theirparent(s),andthisisespeciallytrueofyoungmen.Employedyoungmen
aremuchlesslikelytoliveathomethanyoungmenwithoutajob,andemploymentamongyoungmenhasfallensignificantlyinrecentdecades.The
shareofyoungmenwithjobspeakedaround1960at84%.In2014,only71%
of18-to-34-year-oldmenwereemployed.Similarlywithearnings,youngmen’s
wages(afteradjustingforinflation)havebeenonadownwardtrajectory(轨迹)since1970andfellsignificantlyform2000to2010.Aswageshavefallen,the

Forwomen,delayedmarriage—whichisrelated,inpart,tolabormarket

homewaspartoftheprivatesafetynethelpyoungadultstoweatherthe
economicstorm.
K)Beyondgender,youngadult’slivingarrangementsdifferconsiderableby
education—whichistiedtofinancialmeans.Foryoungadultswithouta
bachelor’sdegree,asof2008livingathomewiththeirparentswasmore
prevalentthanlivingwitharomanticpartner.By2014,36%of18-to
34-year-oldswhohadnotcompletedabachelor’sdegreewerelivingwiththeir
parent(s)while27%werelivingwithaspouseorpartner.Amongcollege
graduates,in201446%weremarriedorlivingwithapartner,andonly19%
werelivingwiththeirparent(s).Youngadultswithacollegedegreehavefared
