Useofgestationstallsinporkproductionremainsacontroversialtopicinanimalwelfare.Immunestatusandmeasuresarefrequentlyusedtoassessstresslevelsandthuswell-beingofconfinedanimals.Theimportantwelfareissueofcloseconfinementamonggestatinggiltswastestedbyquantifyingcortisol,acutephasecytokine,andacutephaseproteinpro-filesbeforeandafterfarrowingofgiltshousedin2systems.LandracexYorkshirecrossbredgiltshousedingroupsof4(group,n=8)inpens(3.9x2.4mwith4individualfeedingspaces,9.36m2totalor2.34m2/gilt)werecomparedwithgiltshousedinstandardindustrystalls(stall,n=16;2.2x0.6m,1.32m2/gilt).Floorswerefullyslatted,andasubstratewasnotprovidedforeithersystem.Cortisolwasdeterminedfromsalivaond105ofgestation,1haftermovingthegiltsintofarrowingstalls(d111),and24hand7dafterfarrowing.Cortisolwasgreater(P=0.04)forgroupgiltscomparedwithstallgilts1haftermovingthemintofarrowingstallsand24hafterfarrowing.Cortisolconcentrationsdecreased(P=0.001)overtime.LeukocytemRNAexpressionofIL-1,IL-1receptorantagonist,andtumornecrosisfactor-
wasdeterminedbyquantitative,reversetranscriptionPCRond35,63,and91ofgestationand72hafterfarrowing.CytokinemRNAexpressionofperipheralbloodmononuclearcellsdidnotdifferbetweenhousingsystemsforIL-1,itsreceptorantagonist,orfortumornecrosisfactor-
.Acutephaseproteins,includingfibrinogen,haptoglobin,and
1-acidglycoproteinweredeterminedforplasmasamplestakenatd35,63,and91ofgestationand72hand14dafterfarrowing.Incontrasttocortisol,plasmafibrinogenconcentrationsincreased(P<0.005)overtime.Haptoglobindidnotdifferbetweentreatments(P>0.10).Stallgiltstendedtohavegreater(P=0.07)plasma

1-acidglycoproteinconcentrationstoreturntobaselinemorequicklyingroup-housedgilts,whichdidnotappeartobedirectlyrelatedtoincreasedcortisoljustbeforefarrowing.Inconclusion,fewdifferencesintheacutephaseresponseweredetectedbetweenhousingsystems,suggestingthattherestingimmunologicalresponsesareonlymildlyaffectedbygestationstalls.

Toinvestigatethemicrobialandnutritionalcharacteristicsofdryfeed,liquidfeedcontainingfermentedliquidcerealgrains,andfermentedliquidfeed,andtheireffectongastrointestinalecologyandgrowthperformance,120pigletsfrom40litterswereusedandhousedinpenswith5animalsineach.The3dietarytreatments(allnonheatedandnonpelleteddiets)were:
adrymealdiet(DRY);afermented,liquidcerealgrainfeed(FLG);andafermentedliquidfeed(FLF).TheFLGdietwaspreparedbystoringthedietarycereals(barleyandwheat)andwater(1:
2.5,wt/wt)inaclosedtankat20°Candaddingtheremainingdietaryingredientsimmediatelybeforefeeding.TheFLFdietwaspreparedbystoringcompoundfeedandwater(1:
2.5,wt/wt)inaclosedtankat20°C.Threetimesdaily,50%ofthefermentedcerealsorcompoundfeedandwaterstoredinthetankswasremovedandreplacedwithanequalamountoffreshcerealsorfeedandwater.Ond14,1pigletfromeachpenwaskilledandsamplesfromthegastrointestinaltractwereobtained.ThepHofthefermentedcerealswas3.85(SD=0.10),thatoftheFLGdietwas5.00(SD=0.18),andthepHoftheFLFdietwas4.45(SD=0.11).Thedietaryconcentrationoflysine(g/16gofN)pointedtoadecreasedconcentrationintheFLF(5.46,SD=0.08)comparedwiththeDRY(6.01)andFLG(6.21,SD=0.27)diets,andtheconcentrationofcadaverinewasgreaterintheFLFdiet(890mg/kg,SD=151.3)thanintheDRY(32mg/kg)orFLG(153mg/kg,SD=18.7)diets.Fermentingonlythecerealcomponentofthediet(FLG)promotedthegrowthofyeaststoagreaterextentthanfermentingthewholediet(FLF).TerminalRFLPprofilesofdietsanddigestafromthestomachandmidcolonshoweddifferencesamongdietarygroups.Thenumberofyeastsabletogrowat37°CinthestomachandcaudalsmallintestinewasgreatestintheFLGgroupcomparedwiththeother2dietarygroups(P<0.01).Inthececumandcolon,thedifferenceswereonlysignificantbetweenpigletsfedtheFLGandtheFLFdiets(P<0.05).Thegreatestnumberofyeastsabletogrowat20°CwasdetectedintheanimalsfedtheFLGdiet.However,thevaluesweredifferentfromtheFLF-fedpigletsonlyinthestomach(P<0.05)andmidcolon(P<0.05).Therewasatendency(P<0.10)forgreaterADGofthepigletsfedtheFLGcomparedwiththeFLFdiet.Feedingliquidfeedcontainingfermented,liquidcerealgrainsasameansofavoidingmicrobialdecarboxylationoffreeaminoacidsinthefeedandincreasingfeedintakebyimprovingpalatabilityseemspromisingbutrequiresfurtherinvestigation.

Anacutestressresponsecanbeprovokedbyabruptsocial,nutritional,andenvironmentalchangesassociatedwithweaning,andthismaydisrupthomeostasisandthuscompromisewell-being.Manipulatingenvironmentalfactors,suchasphotoperiod,mightprovideasimplewaytoreducethephysiologicalconsequencesthatpigletsexperienceduetoweaningstress.Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoevaluatetheimpactsofphotoperiodmanipulationacrossvariousweaningagesonleukocytepopulations,lymphocyteproliferation,naturalkillercytotoxicity(NK),chemotaxis,phagocytosis,andimmunoglobulinG,cortisol,andBWofpigletsduringthenurseryphase.Sixty-eightcrossbredpigletswereobtainedfromsowskeptonashort-day(8hoflight/d)photoperiodfromd90ofgestationuntilweaning.Pigletswereweanedat14,21,or28dofageandkeptonashortorlong(16hoflight/d)photoperioduntil10wkofage.PigletBWandbloodsampleswerecollectedatweaningandat6,8,and10wkofage.Pigsweanedat28dhadreducedneutrophilcounts(P<0.001),phagocytosis(P<0.001),andlymphocyteproliferation(P<0.05)atweaningcomparedwiththoseweanedat14and21d.Pigsweanedat21dtendedtohavelower(P=0.08)lymphocytecountsthandidpigsweanedat14or28d.Pigsweanedat14dhadreduced(P<0.01)NKrelativetothoseweanedat21or28d.PhotoperiodalsoinfluencedpigBWandimmunestatus.Generally,thosepigsonthelong-dayphotoperiodandweanedat28dwereheavier(P<0.001)thantheircounterpartsweanedat14or21d.At6wkofage,NKwasgreater(P=0.002)inpigskeptonalongdayandweanedat14or21dthaninpigsweanedat28d.Phagocytosiswasless(P=0.005)at6wkofage,butwasgreaterat8wk,inpigletskeptonthelongdayandweanedat28dthaninlong-daypigsweanedat14or21d.Theseresultssuggestthatphotoperioddifferentiallyinfluencesimmuneresponsesinpigletsweanedatdifferentagesandindicateaninverserelationshipbetweengrowthandimmunestatus.Here,weaningat28dandalong-dayphotoperiodwasthetreatmentcombinationthatwasmostphysiologicallybeneficialtopiglets,whereasa14-dweaningandshort-dayphotoperiodwasleastphysiologicallybeneficial.
