Thedeathscomeamong reportsofovercrowding onthepopularmountain.TheNepaligovernmentgrantedatotalof381permitstoclimbEverestthisyear,anumberthatdoesn’tincludeguideswhoareonthemountainaswell.Forsomeclimbers,thattraffichasmeantlongerwaittimes—some toldtheHimalayanTimes thewaithasexceededtwohoursbetweenthelastcampandthepeak.MountaineerVanessaO’Brien,whohasalsoclimbedthesevensummits,saidwhenthere’sacrowd,beingamoreexperiencedclimberwon’thelpyou.“Itdoesn’tmatterifyou’rethebestracecardriverintheworld.Ifyou’restuckintraffic,you’restuckintraffic,”shesaidinaninterview.
Andwhenaclimberisstuckinthattraffic,“theirbodyisstartingtodeteriorate(恶化).”O’Brien,whosetarecordasthefastestwomantoreachthehighestpeakoneverycontinent,alsosaidthedescentisoftenharderthantheclimb.
