Managementofflameretardedplasticsfromwasteelectricalandelectronicequipment(WEEE)hasbeenposingamajorchallengetowastemanagementexpertsbecauseofthepotentialenvironmentalcontaminationissuesespeciallytheformationofpolybrominated-dioxinsand-furans(PBDD/F)duringprocessing.InNigeria,largequantitiesofelectronicwaste(e-waste)arecurrentlybeingmanaged—asignificantquantityofwhichisimportedillegallyassecondhandelectronics.Asmuchas75%oftheseillegalimportsareneverreusedbutareratherdiscarded.Thesewasteelectronicdevicesaremostlyolderequipmentthatcontainsbrominatedflameretardants(BFRs)suchaspenta-brominateddiphenylethers(PBDEs),andpolybrominatedbiphenyls(PBBs)whicharepresentlybannedinEuropeundertheEUWEEEandRoHSDirectives.Riskassessmentstudiesfoundbothtobepersistent,bio-accumulativeandtoxic.ThepresentmanagementpracticesforwasteplasticsfromWEEEinNigeria,suchasopenburninganddisposalatopendumps,createspotentialforseriousenvironmentalpollution.Thispaperreviewstheoptionsintheenvironmentallysoundmanagementofwasteplasticsfromelectronicwastes.Optionsavailableincludemechanicalrecycling,reprocessingintochemicals(chemicalfeedstockrecycling)andenergyrecovery.TheCreasolv®andCentrevap®processes,whicharetheoutcomeoftheextensiveresearchatachievingsoundmanagementofwasteplasticsfromWEEEinEurope,arealsoreviewed.Thesearesolvent-basedmethodsofremovingBFRsandtheypresentlyofferthebestcommercialandenvironmentaloptioninthesoundmanagementofwasteBFR-containingplastics.Becausethesedevelopmentshavenotbeencommercialized,WEEEandWEEEplasticsarestillbeingexportedtodevelopingcountries.Theindustrialapplicationoftheseprocessesandthedevelopmentofeco-friendlieralternativeflameretardantswillhelpassuresoundmanagementofWEEEplastics.

TailsinthedistributionofJPY/USDexchangeratereturnsarewellapproximatedbyanexponentiallydampenedpower-law.DistributionparameterestimatesindicatethatyenappreciationjumpsbelongtoaLevyprocesswithunboundedvariation,suggestingthatsamemechanismmayberesponsibleforfluctuationsinnormaltimesaswellasrarecrashes.Incontrast,yendepreciationjumpshaveawelldefinedsecondmomentsuggestingaGaussianregime.Inaddition,extremeepisodesofyenappreciationarelargerandmorepersistentthanepisodesofyendepreciation.Theasymmetryismagnifiedandpower-lawtailsaremoreelongatedduringtimesofhigherinterestratedifferentialbetweenU.S.andJapanandhigherlevelofVIXindicatingthatcarrytrademaybethedriver.Weproposeamodelofstrategiccarrytraderbehaviorthatinequilibriumgeneratesexponentiallydampenedpower-lawdistributionofjumpsinforeignexchangealongwith“upbythestairsdownbytheelevator”dynamicsarisingfromtheassymetriesbetweennegativeandpositivejumps.

Whileevidencesuggeststrustplaysafundamentalroleinmaintainingsuccessfulbuyer–sellerrelationshipsinJapan,littleisknownconceptuallyastohowforeignsellerscanbestdeveloptrustinthemindsoftheirJapanesecustomers.Inthisresearch,wedevelopandtestamulti-componentmodelofUSselleractionsthatmanifestkeytrust-buildingprocesses(intentionality-andcapability-processes)whichsellersfindeffectiveinbuildingtrustwiththeirJapanesebuyers.Inthisuniqueculturalcontext,theorysuggeststrustdevelopswhensellersdemonstratebenevolentintentionstowardthebuyerandexhibitastrongcapabilitytofulfillbusinesspromises.Ananalysisof181USsellersinJapandemonstratesthatacombinationoftrust-buildingeffortsisrecognizedasbeingcriticalinsellerattemptstodevelopandsustaintrustonthepartoftheirJapanesecustomers.Importantly,culturalsensitivitymediatestheimpactofintentionality-basedpracticesonbuyertrust,whilecapability-basedactivitiesdirectlyinfluencetrust.
