Thescreeninginterviewer’sjobisnottodecidewhetheryouarethebestpersonforthejob,buttojudgewhetheryoucomereasonableclosetoaprofileofthehypotheticallyidealcandidate.
ØConductedbyahumanresourcesspecialist
ØTheinterviewersaretrainedinterviewersandtendtoproceedinalogical,systematicfashion.Theyknowwhatinformationtheyneedandwillasktherightquestionstogetit,collectingandusingfactstoarriveataconclusionthattheycanjustifyatalaterdateifnecessary.
ØApplicantshavetobedirectandconciseintheirreplies,andunderstandexactlywhatinformationtheinterviewersarelookingforbeforeansweringaquestion.Ifapplicantsarenotsure,restatethequestionandaskiftheyhaveitright.Wheneverpossible,frameallanswersinapositivelight.Negativeanswerstendtoinduceprobingandsometimesanadversarialatmosphere.Don’tgiveextrainformationunlessyouknowthatitwillhelpyou.

ØApplicantsneedtobeanattentivelistenerandobserverusingalloftheirsensestobuildrapport,andtochoosethewordsthebosswillrelatepositivelytowhenframingtheirquestionsandanswers.Intheabsenceofthedirectionthatatrainedinterviewergives,manyapplicantsmakethemistakeofrecitingalloftheirskillsandaccomplishments.Thisapproachpushestheresponsibilityforsortingthroughthismassofinformationfortherelevantpartsontotheboss,andthat’sapoorsalesapproach.Ifpossible,applicantsshouldaskquestionstofindoutwhatthebosswouldliketohavedoneandwhatproblemsneedtobesolved.Thentheycanchoosefromamongtheiraccomplishmentsthosethatillustratethatyouhavesolvedsimilarproblems.
