Overview
Thisunitconcernstheadvantagesanddisadvantagesofcollegestudentsdoingparttimejobs.Thisisatopiccloselyrelatedromanystudents,whotakepart-timejobseithertomeettheirfinancialneedsortoaccumulateexperiencefortheirfuturecareer.However,accordingtosomeresearches,part-timeemploymentmayunderminestudents'commitmenttostudy.
TextAisareportofresearchontherelationshipbetweenpart-timeemploymentandstudents'commitmenttostudy.Itfocusesonsomeundesirableeffectsthatpart-timejobsmayhaveonstudents'academicperformanceandprovidesexplanationsforthesenegativeeffects:
Workingstudentsmayspendlesstimedoingschoolassignments,gettootiredfromworktostudy,viewschoollessrewarding,andincreasealcoholanddrugusebecausetheyhavemoresparemoney.Theauthorthensuggeststhatstudentsshouldworknomorethan10hoursaweektoensureacademicsuccess.
Incontrast,TextBstressesthebenefitsofworkingpart-timethroughtheauthor'sownexperienceasaworkingstudent.Theauthoradvocatesthatcollegestudentsshouldworktopaytheirowntuition.Part-timeemploymentnotonlymakesitpossibleforstudentstobefinanciallyindependent,butalsobooststheefficiencyoftheirstudy.
