Hesaw,firsthand,thedevelopmentofthemodernChineseliterarytraditionaftertheMayFourthMovementin1919.Hewasnotjustanobserver,butanimportantparticipantandbuilderofsocialistliterarytraditionsafter1949,andthen,again,arguablyaleaderofthemodernliterarytraditionestablishedinthe1980’s.
“This20-volumecollectionreflectsWang’sliteraryviewandwritingstyleinageneralsense,”saysWangLang,theeldestsonofWangZengqi.
Theydon’treflectthewholepictureofhiswriting,however.Therewasalsotimewhenhewasfuriousandwrotearticlesaboutsocialissues.Itwasalsohisviewthatwritersshouldtakesocialresponsibility.Althoughhisworksinthisrespectarelimited,theyareanimportantpartofhiswritingcareer,WangLangsays.
OneoutstandingcharacteristicofWangZengqi’swritingistheuseofcolloquiallanguage,whichcombinedhismothertongueofGaoyoufromJiangsuprovinceandtheBeijingdialect,becauseheworkedinthecapitalforalongtime,saysLiEr,deputydirectoroftheNationalMuseumofModernChineseLiterature.AnexhibitionofWangZengqi’spaintingsiscurrentlyrunningatthemuseum.
