Inthestudy,researcherslookedatabout1,900schoolchildren.Thescientistsfoundthatthekidswhohadbeeninstructedtospendmoretimeoutdoorsoverthreeyearswere23percentlesslikelytodevelopnearsightednessduringthistimethanthosewhohadnotbeeninstructedtospendmoretimeoutdoors.Moreover,amongthekidswhodidbecomenearsightedduringthestudy,thedegreetowhichtheireyesightworsenedwasslightlysmalleramongthosewhospentmoretimeoutdoors.
Theresearchersselectedsixschoolsandrequiredthechildren,whoseaverageagewas7atthestartofthestudy,toattendoneadditional60-minuteclassofoutdooractivitiesduringeachschooldayforthreeyear.Theparentsofthesechildrenwerealsoencouragedtoengagetheirchildreninoutdooractivitiesafterschool,especiallyduringweekendsandholidays.Theotherhalfofthechildren,fromanothersixschools,continuedtheirusualactivitypatterns.Afterthreeyear,30.4percentofthekidsintheintervention(干预)grouphadbecomenearsighted,comparedwith38.5percentofthekidsintheothergroup.
