partysecretarychenxu,assistantpresidentshiyigong,distinguishedfaculty,studentsandfriends.itisaprivilegetobebackattsinghua,withanopportunitytoexchangeideasonthemostpressingchallengesofourtime.onechallengethatwillshapethiscenturymorethananyotherisourchangingclimate,andtheefforttosecureasustainableandhabitableworld—asrisingsealevelsthreatencoastlines,increasingdroughtaltersecosystemsandglobalcarbonemissionscontinuetorise.
thereisaproverbthatthebesttimetoplantatreeis20yearsago—andthesecondbesttimeisnow.whenifirstvisitedtsinghuasevenyearsago,iplantedatreewithpresidentguinthefriendshipgarden.today,iamgladtoreturntothisbeautifulcampus,foundedonthesiteofoneofbeijing’shistoricgardens.iamgladthetsinghua-harvardtreestandsasasymbolofthemanyrelationshipsacrossourtwouniversities,whichcontinuetogrowandthrive.morethanever,itisatestamenttothepossibilitiesthat,byworkingtogether,weoffertheworld.thatiswhyiwanttospendafewminutestodaytalkingaboutthespecialroleuniversitieslikeoursplayinaddressingclimatechange.
lastnovemberhereinbeijing,presidentxiandpresidentobamamadeajointannouncementonclimatechange,pledgingtolimitthegreenhousegasemissionsofchinaandtheunitedstatesoverthenexttwodecades.itisalandmarkaccord,settingambitiousgoalsfortheworld’stwolargestcarbonemittingcountriesandestablishingamarkerthatpresidentsxiandobamahopewillinspireothercountriestodothesame.wecouldnothavepredictedsuchasharedcommitmentseven,orevenoneyearago,betweenthesetwoleaders—both,infact,ouralumni—oneatsinghuagraduateinchemicalengineeringandthehumanitiesandtheotheragraduateofharvardlawschool.andyetourtwoinstitutionshadalreadysownitsseedsdecadesago—byeducatingleaderswhocanturnmonthsofdiscussionintoaninternationalmilestone,andbycollaboratingformorethan20yearsontheclimateanalysesthatmadeitpossible.inotherwords,bydoingthethingsuniversitiesareuniquelydesignedtodo.
theu.s.-chinajointannouncementonclimatechangerepresentsadefiningmomentbetweenourtwocountriesandfortheworld,amomentworthyofcelebration.chinadeservesgreatcreditforallithasdoneandisdoingtoaddressacomplexsetofeconomicandenvironmentalissues.whilelifting600millionpeopleoutofpoverty,youhavebuilttheworld’slargestcapacityinwindpowerandsecondlargestinsolarpower.asoneharvardclimateexpertputit,china’s“investmentstodecarbonizeitsenergysystemhavedwarfedthoseofanyothernation.”andlastyear,china’
semissionindeeddiddroptwopercent.
yet,evenaswemakerealprogress,thescaleandcomplexityofclimatechangerequirehumilityandlong-termthinking.wehavemadeabeginning.butitisonlyabeginning.therecentvideounderthedomeremindsushowmuchworkislefttobedone.thecommitmentsofgovernmentscanbecarriedoutonlyifeverysectorofsocietycontributes.industry,education,agriculture,business,finance,individualcitizens—allarenecessaryparticipantsinwhatmustbecomeanenergyandenvironmentalrevolution,anewparadigmthatwillimprovepublichealth,carefortheplanet,andputbothofournationsonthepathtowardaprosperous,low-carboneconomy.
nooneunderstandsthisbetterthanthestudentsandfacultyoftsinghua,wherethesesubjectsareresearchprioritiesandyouroutgoingpresidentchenjining,agraduateoftsinghua’sdepartmentofenvironmentalscienceandengineering,hasjustbeenappointedministerofenvironmentalprotection.hehasbeencalledabridge-builder,amanofvisionandfreshideas,andaninspiringleader.
thepromiseofthe2014jointclimatepledgewillrequirethosequalitiesofallofus.itwillcalloneachofustodoourparttotransformtheenergysystemsonwhichwerelyandmitigatetheharmtheycause,to“thinkdifferent,”asapple’sstevejobsusedtosay—toimaginenewwaysofseeingoldproblemsand,asheputit,to“honorthepeoplewho?
canchangetheworldforthebetter.”universitiesareespeciallygoodat“thinkingdifferent.”thatisthepointiwanttoemphasizetoday.toeverygenerationfallsadauntingtask.thisisourtask:
to“thinkdifferent”abouthowweinhabittheearth.wherebettertomeetthischallengethaninbostonandbeijing?
howbettertomeetitthanbyunlockingandharnessingnewknowledge,buildingpoliticalandculturalunderstanding,promotingdialogueandsharingsolutions?
whobettertomeetitthanyou,themostextraordinarystudents,imaginative,curious,daring.thechallengewefacedemandsthreegreatnecessities.
thefirstnecessityispartnership.globalproblemsrequireglobalpartners.climatechangeisaperfectexample.webreathethesameair.wedrinkthesamewater.wesharetheplanet.wecannotliveinacocoon.thestakesaretoohigh.
inanessaywidelyreprintedinchinesemiddleschooltextbookscalled“thegeesereturn,”naturalistaldoleopolddescribesaneducatedwoman,anoutstandingcollegestudent,who,andiquote,“?
hadneverheardorseenthegeesethattwiceayear[flyabove]herwell-insulatedroof.”
couldthiswoman’svaunted“education,”heasks,benomorethan,inhiswords,“tradingawarenessforthingsoflesserworth?
”—addingthatthegoosewho“tradeshis[awareness]issoonapileoffeathers.”weallriskbecomingaproverbial“pileoffeathers”unlesswecultivateawarenessofeachotherandourcommonenvironmentalcrisis,andthenworktogethertosolveit.
wehaveseenthepowerofpartnerships.formorethanacentury,harvardandchinainparticularhavebenefittedfrompartnershipswithhistoriesthatinspireus:
johnkingfairbankin1933,whocaughtthesilverandbluebustotsinghuabeforedawntoteachhisfirststudentstheperspectivesofchinesescholarshiphehadabsorbedfromprofessorjiangtingfu,oneofchina’smosteminenthistoriansandthechairoftsinghua’shistorydepartment.thoseexperienceschangedfairbank’slife.andtheychangedharvard,wherethefairbankcenterforchinesestudiestransformedthefield,andwherethestudyofeastasianowencompassesmorethan370coursesfromhistoryandliteraturetogovernmentandplantbiology.
ernestheywilsonin1908,whonavigatedtheyangtzeriverwithateamofchineseplantcollectors,documentingcultureswithphotographsandcollectingthousandsofplantspecimensforharvard’sarnoldarboretum.wilson’slong-termcollaboration—thesubjectofaforthcomingcctvspecial(andexhibitattheharvardcentershanghai)—establishedoneofourdeepestconnections,celebratingtheextraordinarybeautyanddiversityofchina’snaturalworld.
zhukezhenin1918,whoreceivedhisph.d.fromharvardafterpassingascholarshipexamattheschoolthatwouldbecometsinghua.hebecamethefatherofchinesemeteorology,pioneering5,000yearsofchineseclimatedata,andasauniversitypresidentandvicepresidentofthechineseacademyofsciences,shapedchineseeducationby“cultivatingscientists,”asheputit,andiquote,in“the‘scientificspirit’?
thepursuitforthetruth.”
thatspiritdefinestheharvardchinaproject,foundedin1993asaninterdisciplinaryprogramtostudychina’satmosphericenvironment,energysystemandeconomy,andtheroleofenvironmentinu.s.-chinarelations.basedatharvard’sschoolofengineeringandappliedsciences,itscollaboratorshavespannedmorethanhalfofharvard’sschoolsandmorethanadozenchineseinstitutions,includingsomesevendifferentdepartmentsattsinghua.whentheprogrambegan,beforeclimatechangemadedailyheadlines,evenitsfounders—professormichaelmcelroyandprojectdirectorchrisnielsen,soonjoinedbytsinghuaprofessorcollaborators—couldnotfullyimagineitsimpact.ithasbeenamodelpartnershipandanengineofbroadenvironmentalknowledgethathasinfluencedpolicyinbothcountries,andimprovedthelivesofourcitizens.
