IntheUnitedStatestherearetwomajorpoliticalparties,theDemocraticandtheRepublican.TheDemocraticPartyistheolderofthetwo,tracingitshistorybacktothetimeofAndrewJacksonin1820s.TheRepublicanParty,whichfollowedtheFederalistPartyandtheWhigs,wasorganizedinthe1850sprimarilyasanantislaveryparty.SinceantislaverysentimentwasstrongestinthemanufacturingareaoftheNorthandEast,theRepublicanPartylogicallyadoptedtheprotectivetariffandotherideasfurtheringthegrowthofmanufacturingintheUnitedStates.In1860theDemocraticPartywassplitintotwofactions,thenorthernandthesouthernDemocrats,eachputtingupitsowncandidateforpresident.WhilethetwofactionstogetherpolledmorevotesthandidtheRepublicanticket,theRepublicansreceivedatotalhigherthanthatofeitherfactionoftheDemocrats,andAbrahamLincolnwaselectedpresident.
From1860tothepresentday,therehavebeenmanyattemptstofindnewparties.Butwheneverathirdpartyhashadconsiderableappealatthepolls,oneofbothofthemajorpartiesinthenextelectionhasembracedtheplatformaccountingforitsappeal,andthethirdpartyhasfadedaway.
Overtheyears,therefore,thepositionsofthetwomajorpartieshavebeenchangingandadaptingthemselvestothecurrentlyimportantproblemsofpublicpolicy.AtonetimetheDemocraticPartywasconsideredtobeapartystandingupforstatefights,andtheRepublicanPartyapartyrepresentingtheinterestsofbusinessandindustry.Aclear-cutdifferencebetweenthetwoparties,however,hasnotexistedformorethanhalfacentury.Ifonereadstheplatformsofthetwoparties,onefindsthatthereisverylittledifferencebetweenthem.Eachpartyseemstobeappealingtopracticallyeverygroupofvoters.UnlikethepoliticalpartiesofEurope,andunliketheConservativesandLaboritesinEngland,thepoliticalpartiesintheUnitedStatesarethecollectionsofmanydisparate(不同的)elements.
