1Whyissafetyimportant?
Attentionandadherencetosafetyconsiderationsisevenmoreimportantinapowerelectronicslaboratorythanit’srequiredinanyotherundergraduateelectricalengineeringlaboratories.Powerelectroniccircuitscaninvolvevoltagesofseveralhundredvoltsandcurrentsofseveraltensofamperes.Bycomparisonthevoltagesinallotherteachinglaboratoriesrarelyexceed20Vandthecurrentshardlyeverexceedafewhundredmilliamps.

3Safetyprecautionstominimizethesehazards
3.1GeneralPrecautions
•Becalmandrelaxed,whileworkinginLab.
•Whenworkingwithvoltagesover40Vorwithcurrentsover10A,theremustbeatleasttwopeopleinthelabatalltimes.
•Keeptheworkareaneatandclean.
•Nopaperlyingontableornearbycircuits.
•Alwayswearsafetyglasseswhenworkingwiththecircuitathighpowerorhighvoltage.
•Userubberfloormats(ifavailable)toinsulateyourselffromground,whenworkingintheLab.
•Besureaboutthelocationsoffireextinguishersandfirstaidkitsinlab.
•Aswitchshouldbeincludedineachsupplycircuitsothatwhenopened,theseswitcheswillde-energizetheentiresetup.Placetheseswitchessothatyoucanreachthemquicklyincaseofemergency,andwithoutreachingacrosshotorhighvoltagecomponents.

•Oncefunctionalityisproven,increasevoltagesorpower,stoppingatfrequentlevelstocheckforproperfunctioningofcircuitorforanycomponentsishotorforanyelectricalnoisethatcanaffectthecircuit’soperation.

3.6Precautionswhilemodifyingthecircuit
•SwitchOffthecircuitasperthestepsinsection3.5.
•Modifytheconnectionsasperyourrequirement.
•Againcheckthecircuitasperstepsinsection3.3,andswitchONasperstepsinsection3.4.
3.7OtherPrecautions
•Noloosewiresormetalpiecesshouldbelyingontableornearthecircuit,tocauseshortsandsparking.
•Avoidusinglongwires,thatmaygetinyourwaywhilemakingadjustmentsorchangingleads.
•Keephighvoltagepartsandconnectionsoutofthewayfromaccidentaltouchingandfromanycontactstotestequipmentoranyparts,connectedtoothervoltagelevels.
•Whenworkingwithinductivecircuits,reducevoltagesorcurrentstonearzerobeforeswitchingopenthecircuits.
•BEAWAREofbracelets,rings,metalwatchbands,andloosenecklace(ifyouarewearinganyofthem),theyconductelectricityandcancauseburns.Donotwearthemnearanenergizedcircuit.
•LearnCPRandkeepuptodate.Youcansavealife.
•Whenworkingwithenergizedcircuits(whileoperatingswitches,adjustingcontrols,adjustingtestequipment),useonlyonehandwhilekeepingtherestofyourbodyawayfromconductingsurfaces.

3.1Objective
Theobjectiveofthisexperimentistostudythecharacteristicsofasimpleboostconverter.ThecircuitwillbeoperatedunderCCMandopenloopcondition.Ourmaingoalistocomparethetheoreticalresultswiththeexperimentalresults.

Itisimportantthatcareistakenwhiledoingtheboostconverterexperimentusingthepower-poleboard②.Theinputandoutputterminalsinthecaseoftheboostconverterareinterchangedascomparedtothatofthebuckconverter.V2+&COMistheinputandV1+&COMistheoutput.③
3.2PreparingtheSetup
Maketheconnectionsofthepower-poleboardasshowninFig.1tousethelowerMOSFETandtheupperdiode.
•UsetheBBmagneticsboard④fortheboostcircuit.Theinductoris100μH.
•Useavariableloadresistorasaload.
•Connectthe±12signalsupplytotheDINconnector.SignalsupplyswitchS90shouldbeOFF.

3.3Checksbeforepoweringthecircuit
•Checkthecircuitconnectionsaspertheschematics.
•ConfirmthatyouhaveconnectedtheinputandoutputterminalscorrectlytosourceandloadasshowninFig.1.
•HaveyourcircuitcheckedbyyourLabInstructor.

3.4PoweringtheCircuit
•SwitchONthesignalsupply.CheckforgreenLED.
•Setthedutyratiotoitsminimum.
•SetRL=50Ω.
•Adjusttheswitchingfrequencyto100kHz.
•ApplyinputvoltageVdof10voltsatterminalsV2+andCOM.
3.5Measurements
Takethefollowingmeasurements,
3.5.1VaryingDutyRatio
•Varythedutyratiofromminimumto70%(instepsof10%).
•MeasuretheaverageDCloadvoltage(V1+)forthecorrespondingvaluesofdutyratio.
•Calculatethetheoreticalaverageoutputvoltageforthecorrespondingdutyratios.
•Comparetheobservedaverageoutputvoltageresultswiththecalculatedones.
3.5.2VaryingSwitchingFrequency
•Setthedutyratioto50%,switchingfrequencyto100kHz,RL=50Ω.
•Observeandmakeacopyoftheinputcurrent(CS5⑤)ripplewaveform.
•Observeandmakeacopyoftheoutputvoltage(V1+)ripplewaveform.
•Calculatethepeak-peakinputcurrentripple.
•Repeattheaboveprocedurefordifferentswitchingfrequencies(say40kHz,60kHz,80kHz).
3.5.3VaryingLoad
•Setthedutyratioto35%,RL=50Ωandswitchingfrequencyto100kHz.
•Keepincreasingtheloaduntiltheconverterentersintothediscontinuousconductionmode.⑥
•Observeandmakeacopyoftheinputcurrenttoidentifythattheboostconverterhasgoneintodiscontinuousconductionmode.
•ObserveandmakeacopyofthevoltageacrossMOSFET,voltagewaveformacrossdiode(Usedifferentialprobe).

3.5.4DeterminingEfficiency
•Setthedutyratioto50%.
•Adjusttheloadresistancesothatloadcurrentis0.4A.
•Measuretheefficiencyatswitchingfrequenciesof40kHz,60kHz,80kHz,100kHz.
3.6LabReport
Thelabreportshouldhaveabriefabstractdetailingwhathasbeendoneintheexperiment.Theremainingpartofthereportshouldconsistoftheinformationaskedbelowalongwithanydiscussionyoufeelisnecessary⑦.
