REMARKSBYTHEPRESIDENTAFTERMEETINGWITHENERGYCEOS
THEPRESIDENT:
Goodafternoon,everybody. IjustheldameetingwiththeCEOsofsomeofthemostinnovative1energycompaniesinAmericatotalkaboutgrowthandprogressofasector2thatrepresentsabigpieceofAmerica'seconomicfuture.Asoureconomyadaptstothechallengesofanewcentury,newwaysofproducingandsavinganddistributingenergyofferauniqueopportunitytocreatemillionsofjobsfortheAmericanpeople.
Andobviously,thisisatimelydiscussion,onadayofsoberingnews. Thejobfiguresreleasedthismorningshowthatwelost467,000jobslastmonth. Andwhiletheaveragelossofabout400,000jobspermonththisquarterislessdevastating3thanthe700,000permonththatwelostinthepreviousquarter,andwhiletherearecontinuingsignsthattherecessionisslowing,obviouslythisislittlecomforttoallthoseAmericanswho'velosttheirjobs.
We'vetakensomeextraordinarymeasurestobluntthehardedgesoftheworstrecessionofourlifetime,andtoofferassistancetothosewho'vebornethebruntofthiseconomicstorm. ButasI'vesaidfromthemomentthatIwalkedintothedoorofthisWhiteHouse,ittookyearsforustogetintothismess,anditwilltakeusmorethanafewmonthstoturnitaround.
That'swhythediscussionthatwehadtodayissoimportant.It'smenandwomenlikethesewhowillhelpleadusoutofthisrecessionandintoabetterfuture. Myjob--andourjobasagovernment--istodowhateverwecantounleash4thegreat,generativepowersoftheAmericaneconomybyencouragingtheirefforts.
AndI'mabsolutelyconfidentthatwecan,atthisperiodofdifficulty,proveonceagainwhatthisnationcanachievewhenchallenged. AndI'mconfidentthatwe'renotonlygoingtorecoverfromthisrecessionintheshortterm,butwe'regoingtoprosper5inthelongterm. Todothat,wehavetoactnowtobuildanewfoundationforlasting6growth. Andenergyisoneofthepillarsofthisnewfoundation,essentialbothtoourrecoveryandourlong-termprosperity.
I'mpleasedtosaythatwe'veachievedmoreinthepastfewmonthstocreateanewcleanenergyeconomythanwehadachievedinmanydecadesbefore. Therecoveryplanwilldoubleourcountry'ssupplyofrenewableenergy,andisalreadycreatingnewcleanenergyjobs. Thankstoaremarkable7partnership8betweenautomakers,autoworkers,environmentaladvocates,andstates,wealsosetinmotionanewnationalpolicytoincreasegasmileage9anddecreasecarbonpollutionforallnewcarsandtruckssoldinthiscountry,whichisgoingtosaveus1.8billionbarrelsofoil.
AndlastFriday,theHouseofRepresentativespassedanextraordinarypieceoflegislationthatwouldmakerenewableenergytheprofitablekindofenergyinAmerica. Itwillreduceourdependence10onforeignoil. Itwillpreventtheworstconsequencesofclimatechange. Andaboveall,itholdsthepromiseofmillionsofnewjobs--jobs,bytheway,thatcan'tbeoutsourced.
TheCEOsstanding11behindmeknowalotaboutthesekindsofcompanies. Thesearefolkswhosecompaniesarehelping12toleadthetransformation13towardsacleanenergyfuture. Evenaswefacetougheconomictimes,evenaswecontinuetolosejobs,theCEOsheretoldmethatthey'relookingtohirenewpeople,insomecasestodoubleoreventripleinsizeoverthenextfewyears. Theyaremakingmoneyandtheyarehelpingtheircustomerssavemoneyontheenergyfront.
Sothesecompaniesarevividexamplesofthekindoffuturewecancreate,butit'snowuptotheSenatetocontinuetheworkthatwasbegunintheHousetoforgethismoreprosperousfuture.We'regoingtoneedtosetasidetheposturing14andthepolitics --andwhenweputasidetheoldideological15debates,thenourchoiceisclear. It'sachoicebetweenslowdeclineandrenewedprosperity. It'sachoicebetweenthepastandthefuture.
TheAmericanpeopleIbelievewantustomaketherightchoice,andI'mconfidentthattheSenatewill. Forateveryjuncture16inourhistory,we'vechosentoseizebigopportunities--ratherthanfearbigchallenges. We'vechosentotakeresponsibility. We'vechosentohonorthesacrificesofthosewhocamebeforeus--andfulfill17ourobligationstogenerationstocome. That'swhatwe'regoingtodothistime,aswell.

Themessageforsmallbusinessesismanyofthesebusinessesstartedassmallbusinessesandthey'renowgettingtobebigbusinessesbecauseoftheextraordinaryopportunitiesthatareoutthere.
AnothermessageisthattheyshouldprobablycontactsomeoftheseCEOsbecauseitturnsouttheycansavesmallbusinessesandlargebusinessesalikeupto20or30percentontheirenergyusage.
Andwhenyouheartheinnovationthat'stakingplace--everythingfromLEDlighting18thatcansaveahugeamountonenergycoststonewconcretematerialsthatlastlongerandarewaterproofed19fromtheinsideout,andthatcanmeanthatbridgesandroadsandbuildingscanlast20or30yearslongerthanusingconventionalconcrete;whenyoulookatwhat'sbeingdonewithsolarenergyrightnowinplaceslikeHoustonandFlorida;andthefactthatmanyofthesecompaniesareexportingtheirgoodsandtheirservices,butunfortunately,theirbiggestmarketsrightnowareEuropeandJapanbecausewehaven'tdoneenoughtoemphasizecleanenergyinourowncountry--thatgetsyouexcitedaboutthefuture.
AndoneofthethingsthatI'veconsistentlytalkedaboutsinceItookoffice,andonadaywhereweseethatoureconomyisstillhavingatoughtimegettingmoving,iswe'regoingtohavetoshootforthefutureandnotlookbackwards20.
Somuchofthedebatearoundhealthcare,somuchofthedebatearoundenergy,hasbeenbasedonthisideathatsomehowifwestandstillandwedon'tdoanythingthatwe'regoingtobebetteroff. Andthat'sjustnothowthisworldworks. It'scertainlynothowthemoderneconomyworks. Weknowwe'regoingtohavetochangehowweuseenergy.
Weknowwe'regoingtohavetochangehowweoperateourhealthcaresystems. Weknowthatwe'regoingtohavetochangehowwetrainouryoungpeopletocompeteinthisnewglobaleconomy. Andsotomaketheargumentthatsomehowweshouldjustlockinonthestatusquoorperpetuate21thesamepoliciesthatgotusintothismessinthefirstplace,andthatthatsomehowisgoingtosolveourproblems,justdoesn'tmakeanysense.
Andwhatthesefolksareallaboutisthefuture,andthat'swhatAmericahasalwaysbeenabout. Wearenotfolkswhoarescaredofthefutureorlookbackwards. Wealwaysmeetthechallengesbymovingforward. Andthat'swhatIthinkisgoingtohappenthistime,aswell.
