BorninAlabamain1913,Mrs.ParksgrewuponafarmjustoutsideMontgomeryinatowncalledPineLevel.Shewashome-schooleduntilshewas11.ShelaterattendedtheIndustrialSchoolforGirlsinMontgomery.ShebrieflyattendedtheAlabamaStateTeachersCollegeforNegroes,buthadtodropouttotakecareofhermotherandgrandmotherwhentheybecameill.
Mrs.ParksmarriedRaymondParksin1932.Heencouragedhertofinishhereducation.Thiswasveryuncommonatthattime,especiallyforawoman.Lessthan7percentofAfrican-Americansstudiedinahighschoolinthe1930s.
Mrs.Parksalsosucceededingainingtherighttovote,whichwasverydifficultforblacksunderthesegregationlaws(种族隔离制度).In1943,shebeganworkingasasecretaryfortheNAACP----NationalAssociationfortheAdvancementofColoredPeople.
