AdoraSvitak
Now,Iwanttostartwithaquestion:
WhenwasthelasttimeyouwerecalledchildishForkidslikeme,beingcalledchildishcanbeafrequentoccurrence.
Everytimewemakeirrationaldemands,exhibitirresponsiblebehavior,ordisplayanyothersignsofbeingnormalAmericancitizens,wearecalledchildish,whichreallybothersme.
Afterall,takealookattheseevents:
Imperialismandcolonization,worldwars,GeorgeW.Bush.Askyourself:
Who'sresponsibleAdults.Now,whathavekidsdone
Well,AnneFranktouchedmillionswithherpowerfulaccountoftheHolocaust,RubyBridgeshelpedendsegregationintheUnitedStates,and,mostrecently,CharlieSimpsonhelpedtoraise120XX
Thetraitsthewordchildishaddressesareseensoofteninadultsthatweshouldabolishthisage-discriminatorywordwhenitcomestocriticizingbehaviorassociatedwithirresponsibilityandirrationalthinking.Thankyou.
Thenagain,who'stosaythatcertaintypesofirrationalthinkingaren'texactlywhattheworldneedsMaybeyou'vehadgrandplansbefore,butstoppedyourself,thinking:
That'simpossibleorthatcoststoomuchorthatwon'tbenefitme.Forbetterorworse,wekidsaren'thamperedasmuchwhenitcomestothinkingaboutreasonswhynottodothings.
Kidscanbefullofinspiringaspirationsandhopefulthinking,likemywishthatnoonewenthungryorthateverythingwerefreekindofutopia.Howmanyofyoustilldreamlikethatandbelieveinthepossibilities
Sometimesaknowledgeofhistoryandthepastfailuresofutopianidealscanbeaburdenbecauseyouknowthatifeverythingwerefree,thatthefoodstockswouldbecomedepleted,andscarceandleadtochaos.
Ontheotherhand,wekidsstilldreamaboutperfection.Andthat'sagoodthingbecauseinordertomakeanythingareality,youhavetodreamaboutitfirst.Inmanyways,ouraudacitytoimaginehelpspushtheboundariesofpossibility.
Forinstance,theMuseumofGlassinTacoma,Washington,myhomestate--yoohooWashington--hasaprogramcalledKidsDesignGlass,andkidsdrawtheirownideasforglassart.
Now,theresidentartistsaidtheygotsomeoftheirbestideasthroughtheprogrambecausekidsdon'tthinkaboutthelimitationsofhowharditcanbetoblowglassintocertainshapes.Theyjustthinkofgoodideas.
Now,whenyouthinkofglass,youmightthinkofcolorfulChihulydesignsormaybeItalianvases,butkidschallengeglassartiststogobeyondthatintotherealmofbroken-heartedsnakesandbaconboys,whoyoucanseehasmeatvision.(Laughter)
Now,ourinherentwisdomdoesn'thavetobeinsiders'knowledge.Kidsalreadydoalotoflearningfromadults,andwehavealottoshare.Ithinkthatadultsshouldstartlearningfromkids.
Now,Idomostofmyspeakinginfrontofaneducationcrowd,teachersandstudents,andIlikethisanalogy.Itshouldn'tjustbeateacherattheheadoftheclassroomtellingstudentsdothis,dothat.
Thestudentsshouldteachtheirteachers.Learningbetweengrownupsandkidsshouldbereciprocal.Thereality,unfortunately,isalittledifferent,andithasalottodowithtrust,oralackofit.
Now,ifyoudon'ttrustsomeone,youplacerestrictionsonthem,right.IfIdoubtmyoldersister'sabilitytopaybackthe10percentinterestIestablishedonherlastloan,I'mgoingtowithholdherabilitytogetmoremoneyfrommeuntilshepaysitback.
Truestory,bytheway.Now,adultsseemtohaveaprevalentlyrestrictiveattitudetowardskidsfromevery"don'tdothat,"don'tdothis"intheschoolhandbook,torestrictionsonschoolinternetuse.
Ashistorypointsout,regimesbecomeoppressivewhenthey'refearfulaboutkeepingcontrol.And,althoughadultsmaynotbequiteattheleveloftotalitarianregimes,kidshaveno,orverylittle,sayinmakingtherules,whenreallytheattitudeshouldbereciprocal,meaningthattheadultpopulationshouldlearnandtakeintoaccountthewishesoftheyoungerpopulation.
Now,what'sevenworsethanrestrictionisthatadultsoftenunderestimatekidsabilities.Welovechallenges,butwhenexpectationsarelow,trustme,wewillsinktothem.
Myownparentshadanythingbutlowexpectationsformeandmysister.Okay,sotheydidn'ttellustobecomedoctorsorlawyersoranythinglikethat,butmydaddidreadtousaboutAristotleandpioneergermfighterswhenlotsofotherkidswerehearing"TheWheelsontheBusGoRoundandRound."
Well,weheardthatonetoo,but"PioneerGermFighters"totallyrules.(Laughter)Ilovedtowritefromtheageoffour,andwhenIwassixmymomboughtmemyownlaptopequippedwithMicrosoftWord.
ThankyouBillGatesandthankyouMa.Iwroteover300shortstoriesonthatlittlelaptop,andIwantedtogetpublished.Insteadofjustscoffingatthisheresythatakidwantedtogetpublished,orsayingwaituntilyou'reolder,myparentswerereallysupportive.
Manypublisherswerenotquitesoencouraging.Onelargechildren'spublisherironicallysayingthattheydidn'tworkwithchildren.Children'spublishernotworkingwithchildrenIdon'tknow,you'rekindofalienatingalargeclientthere.
(Laughter)Now,onepublisher,ActionPublishing,waswillingtotakethatleapandtrustme,andtolistentowhatIhadtosay.Theypublishedmyfirstbook,"FlyingFingers,"--
youseeithere--andfromthereon,it'sgonetospeakingathundredsofschools,keynotingtothousandsofeducators,andfinally,today,speakingtoyou.
Iappreciateyourattentiontoday,becausetoshowthatyoutrulycare,youlisten.Butthere'saproblemwiththisrosypictureofkidsbeingsomuchbetterthanadults.Kidsgrowupandbecomeadultsjustlikeyou.
Orjustlikeyou,reallyThegoalisnottoturnkidsintoyourkindofadult,butratherbetteradultsthanyouhavebeen,whichmaybealittlechallengingconsideringyourguyscredentials,
butthewayprogresshappensisbecausenewgenerationsandnewerasgrowanddevelopandbecomebetterthanthepreviousones.It'sthereasonwe'renotintheDarkAgesanymore.
Nomatteryourpositionofplaceinlife,itisimperativetocreateopportunitiesforchildrensothatwecangrowuptoblowyouaway.AdultsandfellowTEDsters,youneedtolistenandlearnfromkidsandtrustusandexpectmorefromus.
Youmustlendaneartoday,becausewearetheleadersoftomorrow,whichmeanswe'regoingtobetakingcareofyouwhenyou'reoldandsenile.No,justkidding.
No,really,wearegoingtobethenextgene
