ARichmondmanwaspickedasaCNNHeroforcreatinganon-profit(非营利的)organizationthatcoachesandcreatescyclingteamsforat-riskchildrenlivingintheprojects.
RichmondCyclingCorpsmembersmeetupseveraltimesaweekforpracticeandtrainingforcompetitions,butCraigDodson,whocreatedtheorganizationbackin2010,saysthenon-profitismorethanthat.
“We’vegottenkidsoutofprison.Wedealwithheavyissues(问题)intheirlife,”Dodsonsaid.
DodsonandtwootherRichmondCyclingCorpsworkersmakesuretheirstudentsdonothaveareasontofail.
“Thereisalotoftrauma(创伤)withthesekids,”Dodsonsaid.“WeareliketheNavySeals.Wehavetobethereforeverypartoftheirlife.”
22-year-oldChristopherMasonwasoneoftheirfirstmembers.MasonwasalsoDodson’sinspirationforstartingthisorganization.
Mason,whowas16-year-oldatthetimeofjoiningRichmondCyclingCorps,isoneofeightkids.HegrewuponFairfieldCourtandsaidhehadseenmanyfriendsdiebyviolenceanddon’twanttobethenextvictim(受害者).
“ThisprogramhashelpedmedigdeepintomyselfandfindthingsIdidn’tthinkIcoulddo,”Masonsaid.“Ilostalotoffriendstothesamething,inthewrongplaceatthewrongtime.So,knowingIcouldbethesamevictimorthesamethingcouldhappentome,thisisactuallymyescape.”
Theinspirationfortheorganizationcamefromaneventbackin2005whenDodsonwasaskedtospeaktoagroupofstudentsinapark.However,Dodsondidn’tknowthatseveralofthemlivedintheprojects.
“Istarttellingthesekids,‘Don’tdodrugsandyoucanbejustlikeme.’Theyjustlookedatmelike,‘Youfool.There’snobridgebigenoughtogetmetowhereyouare,’”DodsontoldCNN.
Now20kidslivingintheprojectslookuptothe37-year-oldasafatherfigure.

Thatbeingsaid,Ihaven’tpostedapicturesaboutbeingpregnantonFacebookoranywhereelse.Iactivelykeepaneyeoutforanyofmyfriendsreferringtomypregnancyinpostsandcommentsanddon’tallowanyofthemonmytimeline.Myhusbandisalsoofthesamemindset,soifwehaven’tmentionedittoyou,chancesareyoudon’tknowanythingaboutmypregnancy.
Thishasbeenandwillcontinuetobeaverypurposefuldecisiononbothourparts.Wesimplydon’tbelievethat,beyondperhapsasimplebirthannouncement(maybeevenwithoutapicture),ourchild’slifeshouldenduponFacebook.
