Therearemanysourcesofinformationgivingvaluabletipsonpropercargostowageandsecuring.Theseguidelinesdependonthemodeandtypeoftransport.Moststandards,guidelinesandcodessharethesametipswhenitcomestoensuringthatcargosaretransportedsafely.OurfollowingtipsarebasedontheCTUGuidelinesfromtheIMO.

Careshouldbetakenthatdifferingclimaticconditions（temperature,humidity,leadingtosweatingandmoisturedamageetc）willnotaffectyourcargo.Moistureabsorbingdesiccantsmayberequiredtoprotectyourcargo.

3.Planyourcargostowage

Beforeloadingyourcargointothecontainerstackallyourpackagesinanareathesamesizeasyourtransportunit.Planthestuffingbeforestartingbystackingallpackagestobeplacedinthecontainerinanareathesamesizeasthecontainer.Thiswillhelpyouvisualizewhatextrasecuringorstabilizingmeansarenecessarytostowand/orsecurethecargoproperly.Ensurethatatightstowageisachievedandthataminimumofemptyspaceisleftforcargostomove.Blockoutspaceswhereverpossible.ACTUcompletelyfilledoutwithnofreespacewillrequireaminimumofcargosecuring!

5.Centerofgravity

Ensurethatthecenterofgravityofyourcargoisatornearthelongitudinalcenterlineofthecontainerandbelowhalftheheightofthecargo.

Maximumpayload

TakecarenottoexceedthemaximumpayloadandthemaximumfloorloadoftheCTU,especiallywhenusingaforklifttrucktomoveyourcargosinandout.

Weightdistribution

Ensurethatyourcargoweightisevenlydistributedthroughoutthecontainerandthattheaxelweightsarenotoverloaded.Foracontainer,notmorethan60%ofthecargoweightmaybedistributedover50%ofthelength.Takecare,especiallywithroundcargoslikesteelcoils,nottooverstressthecontainerfloor.Usetimberbeddingsunderthecoilifnecessary!

6.Preventsliding&tippingofthecargobyproperblocking&bracingthecargousingpolyesterstrapping

Ensurethatallpiecesofcargosarepreventedfrommovingbyblockingandbracing.YourpiecesofcargoshouldfirstbestrappedtogetherusingPolyesterStrappingtocreateunit-loadsthenlashedtothecontainerD-ringstopreventslidingortipping.

7.Usefrictionincreasinganti-slipmatstopreventcargomovement

AnimportantfactorinpreventingmovementofyourcargoisthefrictionalforcebetweenindividualpiecesofcargoandtheCTUfloor.Youcanincreasefrictionalforcesbyusingrubberanti-slipmatswithacertifiedcoefficientoffrictionofminimum0.6µ.Specialcareshouldbetakenwithextremelyslipperycargossuchassteelplateandpaintedtubes.Frictionincreasinganti-slipmatsshouldalwaysbeusedforthistypeofcargo!

Fillupspaceswithdunnage（stowage）suchasdunnagebags,cartonorothersuitablemeans

Unavoidableemptyspacesshouldbefilledwithdunnage（stowage）suchasdunnageairbags,cartonorothersuitablemeans.

DunnageAirBags

Youshouldalwayscarefullyfollowmanufacturer’sinstructionsastomaximumfillingpressuresandmaximumvoids.Itisnotrecommendedtousedunnagebagsbehindthedoorsofcontainers.Cargomovementortemperaturedifferencesmaycausethedoorsto“springout”violentlywhenopened.

Careshouldbetakenwhenmovingfromhightemperaturezonestolowtemperaturezonesandalsofromlowaltitudestohighaltitudesandviceversa.

Allcargos,regardlessofweight,movewhennotadequatelysecuredandaresubjectedtoaforcegreaterthanthefrictionforces.A10toncargowillmovejustaseasilyasa1toncargowhensubjectedtoa1gforceduringbraking.Howeverthe10toncargowilldomuchmoredamageonceitismoving!

10.MakesurethatyourcargosecurersaretrainedinlinewiththelatestIMO/ILO/UNECEguidelines

Allpersonnelinvolvedshouldbetrainedinthesafepacking,stowageandsecuringofcargosincontainers.AttheCordstrapTrainingCenter,weprovidehands-ontrainingconformtheCTUGuidelinesAnnex6.

Specialcareshouldbetakenforcargostowageandsecuringofdangerousorhazardousgoods

Particularcaremustbetakenwhenyoustowandsecurecargointhiscategory.Thereareseparatecodesforhazardousgoods（ADR/IMDG/RID）andyoushouldconsultthesebeforetransportandstowagetakesplace.Twoofthemostsimplebutimportantpointstoobserveare:

1.）Yourcargomustnotbeabletomoveatall;lashallcargoanduseanti-slipmats.

2.）Thesecuringmustnotdamagethepackagingitself.Useedgeprotectors.
