Thestudyfollowedover1,500men,whowere50atthestartofthestudy,for40years.Researcherslookedfortheincidenceofdementia(痴呆)atfollow-upintervalsaswellasthesubjects’reportsoftheirsleepdisturbances.Thehighestriskofdevelopingdementiawasfoundamongmenwhoreportedsleepdisturbancesstartingatage70.WhiletheriskofdevelopingAlzheimer’swasaround50percenthigherformenwithsleepissues,itwasalsoathirdhigherfordementiaingeneral.
Thesleep-dementialinkhasbeenwidelystudiedbyAlzheimer’sresearchers.AnotherstudyconductedbyUppsalaUniversityresearcherspointedtosleepdeprivation(剥夺)withanincreaseofmolecules(分子)inthebrain,whicharefoundininstancesofbraindamage.Anincreaseinthesemoleculeswasseenafterjustonenightofmissedsleep.
