Thatconvenienceisoneofthemainreasonsnearly4millionAmericanstudentstookatleastoneonlinecourseinthe200708schoolyear,accordingtoastudybytheSloanFoundation.Thesamestudyfoundthatonlineenrollmentisgrowingataratemorethan10timesthatofthehighereducationpopulationatlarge—12.9percentvs.1.2percentfortraditional“inseat”students.NowhereisthegrowthfasterthanamongyoungerstudentslikeFigueroawhoareoptingforonlinelearning,evenwhenthetraditionalclassroomis—inhiscase—rightoutsidethefrontdoor.“Thisisagenerationthatlivesonline,”saysVickyPhillips,founderandCEOofG,aservicethatranksonlinelearninginstitutions.“Everythingisinstant,accelerated,andaccessible,andtheyexpecttheireducationtobethatwaytoo.Forthemthereisnoclearlinebetweenthevirtualworldandtheactualworld.”
Oncetargetedatolder,workingadults,distancelearninghasmovedintotheeducationmainstreamatstunningspeedoverthepastcoupleofyears,astechnologyallowseverricher,moreinteractivelearningexperiencesonline—andascollegecostscontinuetoriseandclassroomsarepackedtocapacity.Fortraditionalbrickandmortarinstitutions,thathasmeantascrambletoenteralucrative(可获利的)marketthatusedtobetheexclusiveterritoryofforprofitinstitutionssuchastheUniversityofPhoenixandKaplanUniversity.Establishedbrandnameeducators—includingStanford,Cornell,PennState,andMIT,whichhasplaceditsentirecurriculumonlinethroughitsOpenCourseWareprogram—nowofferextensiveonlinelearningoptionsandarecompetingwiththeforprofitsforstudents.“Thestigmaisgone,”saysPhillips.“Onlinelearninghasreachedmassculturalacceptance.Itsnolongertheuglystepsisterofthehighereducationworld.”
Onlineofferingsthesedayscansometimesevensurpasstheclassroomexperience.AaronWalsh,aprofessoratBostonCollegeandaformervideogamedesigner,haspioneeredImmersiveEducation,amethodofteachingthroughvirtualworlds.MeetinginSecondLifeinsteadofaphysicalclassroom,saysWalsh,allowsforsomefeatsthatgravityrendersimpossible,likehavingarthistorystudentsflytotheceilingoftheSistineChapelorbiologymajorstotakeaMagicSchoolbus—liketripthroughthehumanbody.Usingvideos,podcasts,livechats,Webcams,andwikis,educatorsincreasinglyseeonlinelearningasawaytoengagethevideogamegenerationwithpedagogythatfeelsmorelikeentertainmentthandrudgery.StudentsinthenewhomelandsecuritymastersdegreeprogramattheUniversityofConnecticutthisfall,forexample,willhavecourseworkthatresemblesGrandTheftAuto:
dwellinginacybercitycalledSanLuisReyplaguedwithsuicidebombers,biochemicalattacks,andotherdisasters.AtArizonaState,studentsinanIntroductiontoParentingclassraisea“virtualchild.”Theyhavetoposttheprogressoftheironlinechargethroughallthephasesofchildhood.“Theclassesaresomuchmoreinteractive,andIcanlogonwhenImmostreadytolearn,”saysJaquelynHolleran,ajuniormajoringinfamilyandhumandevelopmentatASU.“Ilikethatsomuchbetterthanhavingtorushtoclassorsitthroughalecturethatsboring.”
Asthelargestgenerationsincethebabyboomattendscollegeatatimeofshrinkingbudgetsandsoaringcosts,manyeducatorsbelievethatonlinelearningholdsthegreatestpromiseforexpandingthecapacityoftheU.S.highereducationsystem.AnddigitalclassroomswillsurelyplayanimportantroleinhelpingtheObamaadministrationpursueitsgoalofraisingthepercentageofcollegegraduatesintheU.S.tofirstintheworldby2020(atleast10othercountriesnowstandintheway).Thesurgeinstudentswithjobsandfamilies,andthoseinthemilitary,hasalsocausedonlineenrollmentstosoar.SarahGerke,anArmyprivatestationedinIraq,keepsupwithhercourseworkatColumbiaCollegeinMissouri,despitetheoccasionalbombing.“EvenifIcouldattendinperson,”shewritesinanemailfromCampLiberty,“IthinkIwouldstickwithonlineclassesfortheconvenience.”
ForpublicinstitutionssuchastheUniversityofMichiganandtheUniversityofMassachusetts,onlinelearningnotonlyextendstheirbrand,itsacosteffectivewaytoservemorestudents.AtUMassOnline,enrollmentamongstudentsundertheageof25hasincreased91percentoverthepastthreeyears.AtThomasEdisonStateCollegeinTrenton,N.J.,thatgrowthrateoverthesameperiodismorethan100percent.“Thebestwaytolowerthecostofhighereducationistograduateontime,”saysUMasspresidentJackWilson.“Moreandmoreweseestudentsusingonlinelearningasanaccelerator,awaytomovemorequicklythroughtheirundergraduateprogram.”
Anotherimportantfactorthathasclosedtheprestigegapisthetightintegrationofonlineprogramsintotheirhostinstitutions.WhenUMasslaunchedUMassOnlinein2001,itusedthesameadmissionstandards,thesamefaculty,thesamecurricula—anditawardedstudentsdegreesindistinguishablefromthosegiventocampusgoingcounterparts.ThevisionofUMassOnlineasaseamlessdivisionoftheuniversityworkedbecause“itfitwiththecultureoftheinstitution,”saysWilson,whowastheCEOofUMassOnlineuntil2003,whenhebecamethepresidentofUMass.Theventurehasalsobeenextremelyprofitable—UMassOnlineearned$46.8millionin2008. Despitethepopularityofonlinelearning,thereareshortcomings.Studentsmaysavemoneyandtime,buttheygiveupcollegesociallife.Chatboardsarehardlyasubstituteforthecamaraderieofthedorm—ortherichnessofculturallifeoncampus.Andwhileitseasytomoveaheadinanonlinecourse,theresnoonelookingoveryourshoulderinavirtualclassroom.“Youhavetobegoodatplanningyourtime,”saysASUsHolleran.“Ifyoudontyouregoingtofallbehind.”Thenagain,helpisonlyanemailaway.
