In1957,the26-year-oldGoodallwenttoKenyatoworkasasecretary.ShealsoarrangedtomeetthefamousscientistLouisLeakey,whowassoimpressedbyherenthusiasmthathehiredherashisassistant.ShewentwithhimonmanytripstotheAfricanjungleandin1960LeakeysentGoodalltoliveamongchimpanzeesinaremoteanimalpreserve,recordingtheanimals’behaviorandinteractions.
ForthreemonthsGoodallmadelittleprogress.Butshesaid,“Inevercameclosetogivingup.”Herbreakthroughcameonedaywhenshesawamalechimpanzeestickapieceofgrassintoatermite(白蚁)hill,thenputthegrassinhismouth.Afterwardshecametothehillanddidthesame.Pullingthegrassout,shediscovereddozensoftermitesonit.Thediscovery—thatsomeanimalsusetools—wasunknowntomostscientistsatthetime.
Goodallsawchimpanzeesexhibithuman-likeemotions,suchasjealousyandlove.Butshealsodiscoveredtheywerecapableofviolentattacksagainsteachother.
