abstract
Globalenvironmentalconcernsandtheescalatingdemandforenergy,coupledwithsteadyprogressin
renewableenergytechnologies,areopeningupnewopportunitiesforutilizationofrenewableenergy
resources.Solarenergyisthemostabundant,inexhaustibleandcleanofalltherenewableenergy
resourcestilldate.Thepowerfromsuninterceptedbytheearthisabout1.8×1011MW,whichismany
timeslargerthanthepresentrateofalltheenergyconsumption.Photovoltaictechnologyisoneofthe
finestwaystoharnessthesolarpower.Thispaperreviewsthephotovoltaictechnology,itspowergener-
atingcapability,thedifferentexistinglightabsorbingmaterialsused,itsenvironmentalaspectcoupled
withavarietyofitsapplications.Thedifferentexistingperformanceandreliabilityevaluationmodels,
sizingandcontrol,gridconnectionanddistributionhavealsobeendiscussed.
