∙Tape-baseddatarecoverycanrequireabiggerrestorewindow.Organizationscannotaffordtohavecriticalinfrastructureofflineanylongerthanisnecessary.Disk-basedbackupandrestoresolutionsmaximizetheamountofdatathatcanberestoredinalimitedamountoftime.Thefasteryoucanrestoredata,thefasteryoucanreturnyourinfrastructuretofulloperationalstatus.
∙Tape-basedrestoresmaynotbeasreliableasothertechnologies.Microsoft’sexperienceshowsa17%annualfailurerateforitsbackuptapesandtapedevices.Additionally,anadministratorperformingatape-basedrestoreoftenneedsaccesstomultipletapes.Ifjustoneofthesetapesisunreadable,thewholerestoreoperationmaycometoahalt.Eachtapeinabackupsetmustbereadable,andthesoftwarecatalogsusedtomanagethosetapesmustalsobefreeofcorruption.Usingtraditionalharddisksasabackupmediumprovidesagreaterdegreeofsuccesswhenitcomestoperformingrestoreoperations.
∙Tapescanbedifficulttomanageatremotesites.EnsuringthattapesarerotatedandthatthecorrecttapesaremadeavailableforbackupandrestoreischallengingwhenorganizationsmaynothaveappropriatelytrainedITstaffateachremotesite.

Manyreal-timereplicationorcontinuousdataprotectionproductsprovidefileorvolume-levelreplicationwhichreplicatesallchangestotheunderlyingdisk.Thiscanleadtoproblemswhenattemptingtorestoredatatoitsoriginalstate.Thedatamaynotbeinaconsistentstatethattheoriginalapplicationcanaccessbecauseitwasinanopenandlockedstatewhenthefilereplicationoccurred.
