Thetablebelowsummariseshowtheassessmentexemplartaskistobemarkedandalsoindicatestheevidencewhichshouldberetainedforexternalmoderation.

Project
Thisproject-basedGradedUnitisintheformofapracticalassignmentandwillbemarkedoutof100.Assessorswillaggregatethemarksachievedbythecandidateforeachstage(planning,developing,evaluating)toarriveatanoverallmarkfortheproject.AssessorswillthenassignagradetothecandidateforthisGradedUnitassessmentbasedonthefollowinggradeboundaries:
♦A=70%–100%
♦B=60%–69%
♦C=50%–59%
♦Fail=lessthan50%
Note:
Ifacandidatefailstheplanningstagewithascoreoflessthan10markstheywillberequiredtore-sitthisstagebeforegoingontosubsequentstages.Inthisevent,thecandidatecanonlyachieveamaximumof10markstobetakenforwardtothefinalGradedUnitmark.

Conditionsofassessment
Candidatesmustbegivenadateforcompletionofthepracticalassignment.Theinstructionsfortheassessmenttaskshouldbedistributedtoallowthecandidatesufficienttimetoassimilatethedetailsandcarryouttheassessmenttask.Duringthetimebetweenthedistributionoftheassessmenttaskinstructionsandthecompletiondate,Assessorsmayanswerquestions,provideclarification,guidanceandreasonableassistance.
Theassessmenttaskshouldbemarkedassoonaspossibleafterthecompletiondate.Thisisespeciallytrueoftheplanningstage.
Thefinalgradinggivenshouldreflectthequalityofthecandidate’sevidenceatthetimeofthecompletiondate.
Re-assessmentofthisGradedUnitshouldbebasedonasignificantlydifferentassessmenttask.
Atthislevel,candidatesshouldworkindependently.Itisuptocentrestotakenecessarystepstoensureauthenticityoftheprojectanditscontents.Thiscouldincludequestioningcandidatesatvariousstagesontheirknowledgeandunderstandingoftheproject,theuseofsignatures,acknowledgingandreferencingsourcesetc.FurtherguidelinesarecontainedinSQApublication‘GuidetoAssessmentandQualityAssuranceforCollegesofFurtherEducation’(AA0841/3,September2003).
Instructionsfordesigningtheassessmenttaskandassessingcandidates
Theassessmenttaskisaproject-basedpracticalassignment.Itmustbeacomplextaskwhichinvolves:
♦variableswhicharecomplexorunfamiliar
♦relationshipswhichneedtobeclarified
♦acontextwhichmaybefamiliarorunfamiliartothecandidate
Theassessmenttaskmustrequirethecandidateto:
♦analysethetaskanddecideonacourseofactionforundertakingtheproject
♦planandorganiseworkandcarryitthroughtocompletion
♦reflectonwhathasbeendoneanddrawconclusionsforthefuture
♦produceevidenceofmeetingtheaimswhichthisGradedUnithasbeendesignedtocover.

Itshouldbeemphasisedtocandidatesthatallthreestagesmustbecompletedsatisfactorilytoachieveapass.Ifcandidatesarerequiredtoundertakeare-assessment,nomorethanaGradeCcanbeawardedtotheassessment.
