rcherinatwo-yearprojectledbymycollege,aimingtofindthebestwaytosupporthigh-abilitystudents.WithfundingfromtheLondonSchoolsExcellenceFund,weteamedupwithsomeofthecountry’stopprivateschools,likeEtonandStPaul’s,aswellasanumberofstateschools,tofindouthowtobringtheknowledge-richlearningthatcharacterizesindependentschoolsintothestatesector.
Beforetheproject,Ihadn’thadmuchcontactwithpeoplewhohadbeeneducatedthere.ButthefirstthingIfoundwhenIvisitedwasthatteachersarethesame.Intheindependentsector,theyhavechallengestoo—justdifferentones.
Aftertwoyears,ourresearchprojecthasproducedahugesetoffindings.
Oneofthemostusefulfindingswastheimportanceofindependentlearninghabitsoutsidetheclassroom.IrealizedthatalthoughIwasalwaystellingstudentsthattheyneededtodofourtofivehoursofprivatestudyaweek,theydidn’thaveaclearideaofwhatthiscouldlooklikebeyondmakingnotes.SoIsetthemdifferentactivitiesincludingreadingarticles,doingactivitiesandcompletingexaminationquestions.
Istartedtoputmuchmoreemphasisonactivitiesoutsidetheclassroom,likeresearchingtopicsbeyondthesyllabus(教学大纲)ordiscussingthingsinthenews.AndIpraisedanyonewhoaskedquestionsinclass,sowecreatedaculturewherestudentswereproudtoaskaquestionratherthanseeingitasawayofflaggingupthefactthattheyhadn’tunderstoodsomething.
Myresearchisbeginningtohavearealinfluence.Mystudentsnowcometoclassandtellmewhattheywanttoknowabout.Buttheynolongerexpectmetodotheresearch—theywanttofindoutforthemselves.AttheendoftheyearIgavestudentsaquestionnaireonindependentlearning.Onewrote,“IndependentlearningwouldlimitthehelpIgotfromotherstudents.Ithelpsyoutothinkforyourself.”

First,theywereintroducedtoPhiladelphia,thentoNewHaven,Boston,andNewYorkCity.Parkvisitorswereencouragedtofeedthem,andsecurityguardsensuredtheirsafety.Inthe1910saleaderoftheBoyScoutsofAmerica(anorganizationteachingboyspracticalskills)saidthatteachingchildrentofeedsquirrelscouldshowtherewardsoftreatingaweakercreaturewithsympathy,saysBenson.
Bytheearly20thcentury,though,Americabegantoregretthefriendlinessithadshownsquirrels.Citieshadoncebeenfilledwithanimals—fromhorsespullinggoodstodairycows.Bythe1950sthoseworkinganimalshadbeenmovedtothecountryside.Petsandwildanimalssuchasbirdsandsquirrelswereallthatremainedoftheurbananimalkingdom.
Beforelong,people’senthusiasmforsquirrelsworeoff,andtheystartedtoseethemasannoyances.Bythe1970smanyparksbannedfeedingthecreatures.Today,itisraretofindkidswiththeirparentsofferingfoodtosquirrelsunderatree.And,unfortunately,withmoreandmorebuildingsbeingconstructedinthecity,fewerinhabitable(适宜栖息的)areasareleftforthelittletree-dwellinganimals.
