Jenningsvisitslocalchurchesandbusinessestocollectpaper,whichhebringstoarecyclingcenterformoney.Butinsteadofputtingthoseearningsinhisownbankaccount,hesendseverydollartoGeorgiaBaptistChildren’sHomes&FamilyMinistries.Onceayear,he’11givetheorganizationachecksomewherebetween$10,000and$35,000.By2016,thatreaches$400,000.
JenningsdevotedhimselftohelpingGeorgiaBaptistChildren’sHomes&FamilyMinistriesafterhisfirstvisittherewhenhewas18.“Whenwewenttoleave,thesethreelittleboysgrabbedmebythekneesandsaid,‘Willyoubemydaddy?
’”JenningstoldTODAY.“AndIsaidI'lldowhatIcan.Thattookmyheart,rightthere.”
Thesedays,Jennings’recyclinghasturnedintoacommunityeffort.Afterhe’smadehisownroundsrecyclingpaperfrombusinessesandchurches,he’11findmoreitemswaitingforhimathome.Communitymembersdropoffotherrecyclablesathishousesohecansellthem,alongwithbooks,food,clothes,andotheritemstogiveaway.
Recyclingcenterstypicallypayjustone-halftothreecentsperpoundofpaper,butJennings’visitshaveaddedupbigtime.In2016alone,hesoldmorethan400,000poundsofpaperand51,000aluminumcans,andcollectedmorethan32,000pennies.Overthecourseof32yearshe’srecycledmorethan9.8millionpoundsofpaper,savingallestimated79,000treesintheprocess.“Heisthelastofadyingbreed(种类),”wroteJennings’friendinaFacebookpost.“OurgenerationandtheonestofollowcouldlearnalotfromMr.Jennings.”

DuringtheruleofElizabethIofEngland(1558—1603),spiessentmessagesbacktoEnglandinbottles.Becauseofthis,thequeen’sassistantopenedeveryfloatingbottlefound.Anyoneelsewasforbiddentoopensuchabottle.Inthelate1700s,BenFranklinusedbottlestoshowwherethemainoceancurrentsintheAtlanticare.Hisfindings,andthechartshedrew,werecorrect.Theyweresoaccurate,infact,thattheyarestillfollowedtoday.
In1929GermanscientistssentabottlefloatingintheSouthIndianOcean.ThemessageaskedthefindertorecordthedateandplaceoftheFinding.Itaskedthatthenoteandboricbesetafloatagain.ThebottlefirstlandedatCapeHornatthetipofSouthAmerica.In1935itwaspickedupthesecondtime,offthecoastofAustralia.Thebottlehadtraveledmorethan16,000miles,possiblythefarthesttripbyabottle.
Thelongesttripintermsoftimetook150years.AJapanesesailorsentabottlefloatingin1784whenhisshipwaswreckedonaPacificOceanreef.In1943itwaspickedup—intheJapanesevillagewherehehadbeenborn.
