Are you the first or the last child in your family?
Or are you a middle or an only child?
Some people 46
it matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means.
Some people say that the eldest children are smart. They are very likely to be 47 . The reason for this is
simple. Parents havea lot of timefor their first child; they give them or her muchattention. So this child is
likely to do well. An only child will succeed for the same reason. What happens to the other children in the
family?
Middle childrendon’t get so much attention,48 they don’t feel that important. If a family has many
children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child, though, often gets special
treatment. He or she is the baby. Often this child grows up to be funny or charming. Do you believe these ideas
about birth order too?
A recent study saw things quite differently. The study found that first children believed
in family rules. Theydidn’t take many chances in theirlives. they 49followed orders. Rules didn’t mean as
much to later children in the family. They went out and followed their own ideas. They took chances and they
often did better in life.

From the time we were babies we have been taught manners. We are taught how to hold a knife and fork
and not to talk with our mouths full. We are taught how to 50 and when to stand and when to sit and the
way to introduce people. Sometimes good manners in one place are very bad manners somewhere else.
Almost everywhere eating51means that people are very friendly to each other. But in parts of Polynesia it
is bad manners to be seen eating beside each other. So they politely turn their backs to each other when they
are taking food. Some East Africans spit four times as a kind of blessing. They do it to show that they want a
52 person to get well, or to bless a new-bornbaby. In many countries, spitting means something completely
different. It may mean that you hate someone. In a village in Arab countries, a visitor will walk 53 all the
tents until he gets to the one he wants to visit. If he passes in front, he will be invited into each tent and asked
to eat. It is rude to refuse.

The dog watch is actually a “clock for keeping time at a rate (比率 ) other than human time” and was
invented in 1991. With this handy watch, you can be aware of time at youranimal’s rate instead of your own.

Earthquake House
Big earthquakes can damage a house, possibly making the people in it get hurt. But our
inventor has a solution, the Earthquake House!
His idea is simple, build a round house that has earthquake sensors (传感器 ) in it. If the
sensors signal the big earthquake, the house is automatically released (松开 ) from its chains.
Don’t worry. You always remain upright in it. wedon’t recommend ( 推荐 ) this for a hillside
home because there aren’t any brakes to stop it!
Smell this
How do you know if your breath smells nice, or if it smells bad?
It’s difficult to know because it’s very hard
to smell the air that comes out of your own mouth.Smell This is useful for this situation. You just place the
