Rod-pumpingsystemssuchassucker-rodtypepumpingunitsandthelikearewidelyusedinthepetroleumindustryinordertoassistinrecoveringfluidfromwellsextendingintosubterraneanformationscontainingsuchfluid.Atypicalsucker-rodunitincludesasucker-rodstringwhichextendsintothewellandamotororotherstructureatthesurfaceforgeneratinganupanddownmovementoftherodstringinordertooperateadownholepump.
Avarietyofmalfunctionscanoccurwithsuchsystems,includingwornpumps,brokensucker-rods,splittubing,stuckvalvesandthelike.Thesemalfunctionscanbecausedbynormalwearandtear,andcanbeacceleratedand/orexacerbatedbyabnormalpumpingconditions.
