ADAPTIVEDIC7IONARYFORAFINGERPRINTRECOGNIZER
BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTION
Thepresentinventionrelates,ingeneral,tofingerprintpatternrecognition,andmoreparticularly,toamethodforfingerprintrecognitionwithlearningcapability.
Afingerprintrecognitionapparatusiswellknownwhichrecognizesafingerprintpattern,storesthepatterninmemory,andcomparesthesubsequententryofafingerprintpatternwiththestoredfingerprintpatterntoprovideacorrespondencesignalwhentheycorrespondwitheachother.
Forexample,afingerprintcomparisonapparatusisdisclosedinJapanesePatentPublicationNo.76964,1988whereinafingerprintimagetobecheckediscomparedwitharegisteredfingerprintimage,saidapparatusincludingamonitorwhichdisplaysthefingerprintimageofthefingertobecomparedandanindicatordisplayingafingerpositionguideonthemonitorscreen.Furthermore,inJapanesePatentPublicationNo.149776,1988,afingerprintcomparisonapparatusisdisclosedwhereinafingerprintisscannedseveraltimesforonefingeratthefingerprintscanningsectionduringfingerprintdataregistrationandonepieceofthedatacapturedthroughseveralsessionsofscanningisregisteredandstoredasreferencefingerprintdata.Inthisfingerprintcomparisonsystem,otherscanneddataarecomparedwiththereferencefingerprintdatatocomputetherateofcorrespondence,whichisregisteredandstored,whereuponthefingerprintscannedatthefingerprintscanningsectioniscomparedwithsaidreferencefingerprintdatatodeterminetherateofcorrespondence,bymeansofwhichthecorrespondenceofthescannedfingerprintsisjudgedonthebasisofwhetherornottheaboverateofcorrespondenceexceedsthereferenceleveldeterminedaccordingtosaidregisteredandstoredrateofcorrespondence.
Inpriorartfingerprintrecognitionapparatus,anopticalsignalofafingerprintpatternisresolvedintonumeroussegments,eachofwhichisquantizedintoabinarysignal,anditisdeterminedwhetherthefingerprintpatterntobecomparedisthesameastheregisteredfingerprintpatternaccordingtothedegreeofcorrespondencebetweenthesegmentsbasedonsaidbinarysignal.However,itisdifficultforthesubjecttopresshisorherfingerprintagainsttheprismataconstantpressureorinafixeddirection.Therefore,evenwhenthefingerprintpatternofafingerisregisteredinmemory,therateofcorrespondencebetweentheregisteredfingerprintpatternandthesubsequentlyenteredfingerprintpatternislow,sothatfingerprintpatternsmustbeenteredmanytimesinordertoberecognizedcorrectly.
Inthisrespect,thefingerprintcomparisonsystemdisclosedinJapanesePatentPublicationNo.149776,1988requiresmultipleentriesoffingerprintdataatthebeginningofthefingerrecognitionprocess.Duringthisprocess,becauseonlyonepieceoffingerprintdataisregisteredandstored,andbecausetherateofcorrespondenceiscomparedwithreferencetothesinglepieceoffingerprintdataregistered,thedisadvantageisthatthefrequencyofcorrespondencebetweencorrectfingerprintdataenteredandtheregisteredfingerprintdataissignificantlyreducedwhentheaccuracyoffingerprintcomparisonisenhanced.Ontheotherhand,whentheaccuracyisreduced,thefrequencyofcorrespondencemayincrease,buterroneousrecognitionoffingerprintdatawillalsoincrease.Sincechildren'sfingerprintpatterns
changesignificantlyovershortperiodsoftime,thefingerprintcomparisonsystemdisclosedinsaidJapanesePatentPublicationhasthedisadvantageoffailingtoaccuratelyrecognizethefingerprintsofgrowingchildren.
Accordingly,itisanobjectofthepresentinventiontoprovideamethodandapparatusforrecognizingafingerprintpatternwherebyahighrateofrecognitionisachievedbymemorizingwithlearningcapabilityanewfingerprintpatternhavingahighrateofcorrespondenceinplaceofapreviouslystoredfingerprintpatternwithalowrateofcorrespondence.
