Workonitcontinued,though.Theroom-sizedcomputerwascompletelyelectronic,soitshouldhavebeenfarfasterthantheotherbigwar-timecalculator,theMarkI,developedbyIBM.TheMarkI,drivenbyelectricity,hadmovingpartsthatsloweditdownbutitsinstructionscouldbestoredonapapertape,whichgaveitabigadvantage.InENIAC,however,everycalculationinvolvedputtingcables(电缆)intoaboard.
ToprogramENIAC,thewomenhadtofirstanalyzehundredsofequations(公式)involvedinaparticularcalculation.Then,theydeterminedwhichcablesshouldgowhere,sothemachinewoulddotherightstepsintherightorder.Theyunderstoodbothmathematicsandthemachine.
