PSALM52
Title.TotheChiefMusician.EvenshortPsalms,iftheyrecordbutoneinstanceofthegoodnessoftheLord,andrebukebutbrieflytheprideofman,areworthyofourbestminstrelsy.WhenweseethateachPsalmisdedicatedto"thechiefmusician,"itshouldmakeusvalueourpsalmody,andforbidustopraisetheLordcarelessly.Maschil.AnInstructive.EventhemaliceofaDoegmayfurnishinstructiontoaDavid.APsalmofDavid.HewastheprimeobjectofDoeg'sdoggishhatred,andthereforethemostfittingpersontodrawfromtheincidentthelessonconcealedwithinit.WhenDoegtheEdomitecameandtoldSaul,andsaithuntohim,DavidiscometothehouseofAhimelech.Bythisdeceitfultalebearing,heprocuredthedeathofallthepriestsatNob:
thoughithadbeenacrimetohavesuccouredDavidasarebel,theywerenotintheirintentandknowledgeguiltyofthefault.Davidfeltmuchthevillanyofthisarchenemy,andherehedenounceshiminvigorousterms;itmaybealsothathehasSaulinhiseye.

EXPOSITION
Ver.2.Thytonguedevisethmischiefs.Thouspeakestwithanulteriordesign.TheinformationgivenwasforSaul'sassistanceapparently,butinverydeedinhishearttheEdomitehatedthepriestsoftheGodofJacob.Itisamarkofdeepdepravity,whentheevilspokeniscraftilyintendedtopromoteayetgreaterevil.Likeasharprazor,workingdeceitfully.Davidrepresentsthefalsetongueasbeingeffectualformischief,likearazorwhich,unawarestothepersonoperatedon,ismakinghimbald;sosoftlyanddeftlydoOrientalbarbersperformtheirwork.Orhemaymeanthataswitharazoraman'sthroatmaybecutveryspeedily,underthepretenceofshavinghim,eventhuskeenly,basely,buteffectuallyDoegdestroyedthebandofthepriests.Whettedbymalice,andguidedbycraft,hedidhiscruelworkwithaccursedthoroughness.

Ver.4.Thoulovest.Thouhastataste,agustoforevillanguage.Alldevouringwords.Therearewordsthat,likeboaconstrictors,swallowmenwhole,orlikelions,rendmentopieces;thesewordsevilmindsarefondof.Theiroratoryisevermorefuriousandbloody.Thatwhichwillmostreadilyprovokethelowestpassionstheyaresuretoemploy,andtheythinksuchpanderingtothemadnessofthewickedtobeeloquenceofahighorder.Othoudeceitfultongue.Mencanmanagetosayagreatmanyfuriousthings,andyetcoveralloverwiththepretextofjustice.Theyclaimthattheyarejealousfortheright,butthetruthistheyaredeterminedtoputdowntruthandholiness,andcraftilygoaboutitunderthistransparentpretence.
