Formyproposedjourney,thefirstprioritywasclearlytostartlearningArabic.Ihaveneverbeenalinguist.ThoughIhadtraveledwidelyasajournalist,IhadnevermanagedtopickupmorethanasmatteringofphrasesinanytongueotherthanFrench,andevenmyFrench,waslaboriousforwantoflengthypractice.Theprospectoftacklingoneofthenotoriouslydifficultlanguagesattheageofforty,andtryingtospeakitwell,bothdeterredandexcitedme.Itwasperhapsexpectingalittletoomuchofacuriouslyunreceptivepartofmyself,yetthepossibilitythatImightgainaccesstoacompletelyaliencultureandtraditionbythismeanswasenormouslypleasing.
Ienrolledasapupilinasmallschoolinthecenterofthecity.ItwasrunbyaMrBeheit,ofdapperappearanceandexplosivetemperament,whoassuredmethatafterthreemonthsofhisspecialtreatmentIwouldspeakArabicfluently.WhereuponhedrewfromhisdeskapostcardwhichanoldpupilhadsenthimfromsomewhereintheMiddleEast,expressinggreatgratitudeandreportingtheastonishmentoflocalArabsthathecouldconversewiththemlikeanative.ItwaswritteninEnglish.MrBeheithimselfspentmostofhistimecoachingbusinessmeninFrench,andthroughthethin,partitionedwallsofhisschoolonecouldhearhimbellowinginexasperationatsomeconfusedentrepreneur:

EachdayIwasmentallyexhaustedbythestrainofamorninginschool,followedbyanafternoonstrugglingathomewithataperecorder.Yettherewasreliefinthemostelementaryformsofunderstandingandprogress.WhenmerelygotthedriftofatorrentwhichAhmedhadjustreleased,Iwaschildishlyelated.WhenImanagedtorollacompletesentenceoffmytonguewithoutapparentlythinkingwhatIwassaying,anditcameoutright,Ibeamedlikeanidiot.AndtheenjoymentofreadingandwritingtheflowingArabicscriptwassomethingthatdidnotleavemeonceIhadmasteredit.BytheendofJune,no-onecouldhavedescribedmeasanythinglikeafluentspeakerofArabic.Iwasapproximatelyinthepositionofafifteen-yearoldwho,equippedwithamodicumofschoolroomFrench,nervouslyawaitshisfirsttriptoParis.ButthiswassomethingIcouldreproveuponinmyowntime.IbadefarewelltoMrBeheit,stillstrugglingtodrivetheFrenchnegativeintothestillconfusedmindofMrJones.
