Inonestudy,theresearchersasked229peopletolistento27differentspeakerswhovariedintermsoftheirage,race,genderandsocialclass.Theparticipantsheardeachspeakersayatotalofsevendifferentwords.Basedonjustthisshortaudio,participantswereabletocorrectlyidentifywhichspeakerswerecollege-educated55percentofthetimemorethanwhatwouldbeexpectedbychance.Amajorlimitationofthisstudy,however,wasthatitusedcollegeeducationasacriterionforsocialclass.
Theninanotherexperiment,302participantswereaskedtoeitherlistentoorreadtranscriptsfrom90secondsofrecordedspeechinwhichthespeakerstalkedaboutthemselveswithoutexplicitlymentioninganythingabouttheirsocialclass.Participantswereaskedtojudgewhattheythoughtthesocialclassesofthespeakerswerebyusinga10-rungascending(上升的)ladderofincreasingincome,educationandoccupation.Theyfoundthatparticipantswhoheardtheaudiorecordingsweremoreaccurateinjudgingwherethespeakersfellintermsoftheirsocialstatus.
Toshowwhethertheseinferenceshavereal-worldconsequences,Krausandhiscolleaguesrananotherexperiment.Theyrecruited274participants,allofwhomhadpasthiringexperience,toeitherlistentotheaudioorreadatranscriptofthecontent.Thefindingsshowedthatparticipantswereabletoaccuratelyjudgethesocialclassofthecandidatesandthatthiseffectwasstrongerforparticipantswhohadheardtheaudiorecordings.Inaddition,participantsjudgedthehigher-classcandidatesasmorecompetent,abetterfitforthejobandmorelikelytobehired.
