Inthe1950s,whilestillastudent,VargasLlosaworkedasajournalistforLaIndustria.Hisfirstcollectionofshortstories,LOSJEFES,appearedin1959.“IlikedFaulknerbutIimitatedHemingway,”hesaidlater.VargasLlosamovedtoParisbecausehefeltthatinPeruhecouldnotearnhislivingasaseriouswriter.AlthoughtheboomofLatinAmericanfictioninthe1960sopeneddoorstosomeauthorsforcommercialsuccess,thegreatmajorityofPeruvianwriterssufferedfromtheproblemsofthecountry'spublishingindustry.InFranceVargasLlosaworkedasSpanishteacher,journalistandbroadcaster.Fromthelate1960sVargasLlosaworkedasavisitingprofessoratmanyAmericanandEuropeanuniversities.In1970VargasLlosamovedtoBarcelonaandfiveyearslaterhesettledbackinPeru.MostofhisnovelsaresetinPeru.
