LewisCarrollhasdelightedcountlessreaders,youngandold,withAliceinWonderland,ThroughtheLookingGlass,andnumerouspoems.Intheseworks,Carrolldevelopeddozensofnonsensicalwordssuchas“chortle”and“galumph”.ManyofthesewordsarecombinednaturallywithmorecommonwordsintheEnglishlanguage.Carrollreferredtohismade-upwordsas“portmanteau”words,namedafterakindofleathersuitcasethatopensintotwocompartments.Thenamewaswellsuited,becausemostofCarroll’swordshadtwocompartments.Ratherthanbeingentirelyfabricated(虚构),theywereusuallymadefromthecombinedpartsoftwodifferentwords.A“snark”,forexample,clearlycamefromasnakeandashark.
