ButshecausesEriktochangehisplanswhensheunmaskshimand,tothehorrorofboth,beholdshisnoseless,lipless,sunken-eyedfacewhichresemblesaskulldriedupbythecenturies,coveredinyelloweddeadflesh.Fearingthatshewillleavehim,hedecidestokeepherwithhimforever,butwhenChristinerequestsreleaseaftertwoweeks,heagreesonconditionthatshewearhisringandbefaithfultohim.
Ontheroofoftheoperahouse,ChristinetellsRaoulthatErikabductedher.RaoulpromisestotakeChristineawaytoaplacewhereErikcanneverfindher.RaoultellsChristineheshallactonhispromisethenextday,towhichChristineagrees.She,however,haspityforErikandwillnotgountilshehassungasongforhimonelasttime.
NeitherisawarethatErikhasbeenlisteningtotheirconversationandthathehasbecomeextremelyjealous.
Thefollowingnight,ErikkidnapsChristineduringaproductionofFaustandtriestoforceChristinetomarryhim.Hestatesthatifsherefuses,hewilluseexplosives(whichhehasplantedinthecellars)todestroytheentireoperahouse.
Christinerefuses,untilsherealizesthatEriklearnedofRaoul'sattempttorescueherandhastrappedRaoulinahottorturechamber(alongwiththePersian,anoldacquaintanceofErikwhowasgoingtohelpRaoul).TosavethemandthepeopleaboveintheOpera,ChristineagreestomarryErik.ErikinitiallytriestodrownRaoulandthePersian,usingthewaterwhichwouldhavebeenusedtodousetheexplosives.ButChristinebegsandofferstobehis"livingbride",promisinghimnottokillherselfafterbecominghisbride,asshehadbothcontemplatedandattemptedearlierinthenovel.ErikeventuallyrescuesRaoulandthePersianfromhistorturechamber.WhenErikisalonewithChristine,heliftshismasktokissheronherforehead,andisgivenakissback.
Erikrevealsthathehasneverreceivedakiss(notevenfromhisownmother)norhasbeenallowedtogiveoneandisovercomewithemotion.HeandChristinethencrytogetherandtheirtears"mingle".Eriklaterexpressesthathehasneverfeltsoclosetoanotherhumanbeing.
