摘要:
语言翻译的历史几乎和语言一样非常悠久,翻译在世界文化的发展中一直发挥着重要作用。
翻译家和翻译理论家群星灿烂,硕果累累,为人类文化的传承做出了杰出的贡献。
笔者从信息传递的视角对翻译的过程进行分析,认为翻译的过程是信息在其载体语言之间传递的过程。
起始部分首先明确了翻译的定义,并对翻译和翻译理论的历史进行了回顾。
接下来就语言的功能进行了讨论,作为第三部分的铺垫。
第三部系统地论述了信息是如何在源语言和目标语言之间传递的。
第四部分在前三部分的基础上就如何做好翻译进行了讨论。

Abstract:
Translationisalmostasoldaslanguageandhasplayedandplaysakeyroleinthedevelopmentofworldculture.Duringthelongtranslationhistory,manytranslatorsandtranslation-theoreticiancameforthfruitfullyandpresentedtheirwidelydivergentorgeneralalikeopinionsofprinciplesontranslationfromdifferentperspectives.Translationhasbeenheatedtopicoveralongtime.However,translationseemsstilllackacomprehensivetheorythatcanexplainwhatonearthitisandhowittakesplace.Inthepresentpaper,theauthorpresentsananalyticalstudyoftheprocessoftranslationfromaninfo-transferringperspective.HethinksthattheprocessoftranslationisaprocessofdecodingtheinformationfromtheSLandthenencodingthemintotheTL.Thispaperstartswiththedefinitionoftranslationandahistoricaloverviewoftranslationtheoryandpractice.Secondlycomesananalysisofthefunctionsoflanguage,whichisthebaseofthethirdpart.Thencomesthemainpartofthepaper.Inthethirdpart,theauthorgivesasystemicanalysisoftheprocessoftranslation.Thenextpartfocusesonhowtoapplythetheorytotranslationpractice.

IIntroduction
Translationisalmostasoldaslanguageandhasahistoryashonorableandascomplexasthatofanyotherbranchofliterature.EvensincethesecondcenturyinChinaandthefirstcenturyinthewest,therehasbeeninterlingualtranslation.And,sincethentranslationhasbeenahotlydebatedtopic.Therefore,itcanbeseenthatthattranslationhasbeenaheatedtopicoveralongperiodoftime.However,translationstillseemstolackacomprehensivetheorythatcanexplainwhatonearthitisandhowittakesplace.InChinesetranslationcircle,somepeopleevendoubtwhetherornotitispossibleandnecessarytoestablishthescienceoftranslation---translatology.Themainreasonisperhapsthattheworld“translation”itselfisaveryambiguousone.TheChineseequivalent“fanyi”soundsevenfuzziertoo.Fanyi,inChinese,mayeitherstandforasubjectofthecurriculum,ajobpeopleengagein,apieceofliterarywork,orthetranslatingorinterpretingworkitself.Sometimes,“fanyi”mayevenrefertothetranslatororinterpreterhimself/herself.Translationcoversaverybroadrange.Intermsoflanguages,itcanbedividedintotwocategories:
fromnativelanguagesintoforeignlanguagesandviceversa;intermsofthemode,itcanbedividedintooralinterpretation,writtentranslationandmachinetranslation;intermsofmaterialstobetranslated,thereistranslationofscientificmaterials,translationofliteraryworkssuchasnovels,stories,prose,poetry,drama,etc.,translationofpoliticalessayssuchastreatisesonsocialproblems,reports,speeches,etc.,andtranslationofpracticalwritingasofficialdocuments,contractsandagreements,notices,receipts,etc.;intermsofdisposal,itcanbeeitherfull-texttranslation,abridgedtranslationoradaptedtranslation.Thecomplexityofthesoleterm“translation”itselfsuggestsnosimplicityinthestudyoftranslation.
Therefore,itisofgreatsignificancethatacomprehensivedefinitionontranslationbesupplied.Then,whatonearthistranslationsupposedtobe?
Somefamoustranslation-theoreticiangaveustheirdefinitions.EncyclopediaBritannica(1991:
24)definesitas“theactorprocessofrenderingwhatisexpressedinonelanguageorsetofsymbolsbymeansofanotherlanguageorsetofsymbols”.Catford(1965:
65)thinksthattranslatingis“thereplacementoftextualmaterialinonelanguagebyequivalenttextualmaterialinanotherlanguage”.Nida(1965:
45)saysthat“translatingconsistsinreproducinginthereceptorlanguagetheclosestnaturalequivalentofthesourcelanguagemassage,firstintermofmeaningandsecondlyintermofstyle”.AndBarhudarov(1975:
23)statesthat“translationisaprocessinwhichtheparoleofthelanguageistransferredintotheparoleofanotherwiththecontent,i.e.meaningunchanged”.Duff(1989:
5)thinksthat“translationofconveyingmessageacrosslinguisticandculturalbarriers;itisaneminentlycommunicativeactivity”.
Theaforementioneddefinitionshavedescribedwhatisbeingdoneintheprocessoftranslationfromdifferentangles.Howevermanyothertranslationtheoriststhinkthattranslatingshouldbebetterconsideredasasemiotictransformation.AsLudskanov(1975:
5-8)thinks,
Semiotictransformationsarethereplacementofthesignsencodingamessagebysignsofanothercode,preserving(sofaraspossibleinthefaceofentropy)invariantinformationwithrespecttoagivesystemofreplace.
Itcanbeseenthattranslationisbetterbeconsideredasaninfo-transferringactivity.Inthepresentdissertation,theauthorthinksalikewithNida,thefamousAmericantranslation-theoretician,andtakeshisdefinitionastheonehefollows.
1.1TheoriesandHistoriesofTranslation
Sincewehaveadefinitionoftranslationtofollowandaroughunderstandingofit.Abriefhistoricaloverviewoftranslationtheoryandthepracticewillbeofgreathelpandplayaspecialroleduringthediscussioninthepresentessay.Asmentionedearlier,translationhasalonghistoryandofgreatcomplexityaslanguageandanyotherbranchofliterature.Hereisabriefhistoricaloverviewoftranslationtheoryandpracticetohelpthefurtherdiscussionontheprocessoftranslation.
1.1.1TranslationandTranslationTheoryStudyAbroad
InEuropethefirsttranslatorwhosenamehasbeenrecordedwastheGreekslaveLiviusAndronicus,whoputtheOdysseyintoLatinverse.Verypossiblyhewasnotthefirstwriterwhoactuallymadeatranslation,buthiseffectisofinterestbecauseofitslongsurvival.
Later,theearlyLatinauthors—NaeviusandEnismadetranslationofGreekplays,whichmadeagreatconstructionontheearlytranslation.
Severalcenturieslater,wearebroughttoagroupoftranslationswhichhaveahistoricalsignificancebytheinfluencetheyexertedonEuropeanscholarship.
Then,bythetwelfthcenturytheartoftranslationtouchedheightswhichitmaysincehaveequaledbuthasnotsurpassed.
TheageofthefirstElizabethwasalsothefirstgreatageoftranslationinEngland,evenastheageofthesecondElizabethisthesecondsucheraofcopioustranslation.Inthelastdecadeoftheeighteenthcenturytherewaspublishedoneoftheraredissertationsontheartoftranslation.
Thetranslatorsofthenineteenthcenturyincludeseveralgreatnames,andamongthemthefirsttobementionedmustbeThomasCarlyle.And,Byron,ShelleyandLongfellowalsoneedtobementioned.
SincetheendofWorldWarIIfactsaboutthepracticeoftranslationhavebeenobvious.ThefirstisthatthecomplaintofRitchieandMoorecannolongerbeupheld:
evenasuperficialstudyoftheliteraryreview-pagesofnewspapersormagazinesrevealsthepublicationofambitious,scholarlytranslationsofallkinds.Thesecondisthestrengthoftheinterestinclassicalliterature.
1.1.2TranslationandTranslationTheoryStudyinChina
Roughly,therearefourwavesontranslationinChina,andtheyareDonghanDynastytoTangandSongDynasties,lateMingDynastytoearlyQingDynasty,andOpiumWarto“TheMayFourth”period,characterizedbythetranslationofsutra,technologyandWesterntheoriesrespectively.Bynow,withtheadventofnetworkingandintegrationoftheglobaleconomy,thefourthwaveoftranslationisappearing.Thiswaveisunparalleledintermsofscale,scope,qualityaswellascontributiontothedevelopmentoftheChinesesocietycomparingwiththefirstthreewaves.Theemergenceofthiswaveisanimportantchanceforcarryingoutreformandopening–uppolicyandspeeduptherenaissanceofnationaleconomy.
