However,othersmaintainthat“nopains,nogains”.Withoutexertingoneself,onecouldneverexpecttoachievesuessinnomatterwhatoneisdoing.Asisknowntoall,thereisnoroyalroadtothesummitofsuess.Oneislikelytosueedonlywhenonehasworkedwithwhole-hearteddevotionandperseverance.Thosewhoarelazy,sloppyandindifferenttotheirwork,thosewhoneverconcentrateonworkwilldefinitelyendinfailure.Onthewhole,asfarastheyareconcerned,hard-workingisthedecisivefactortosuess.

Whichtwo,amongathouandwisemen,willdefinesuessinthesamewords;yetfailureisalwaysdescribedbutoneway.Failureisman'sinabilitytoreachhisgoalsinlife,whatevertheymaybe.
Intruth,theonlydifferencebetweenthosewhohavefailedandthosewhohavesuessedliesinthedifferenceoftheirhabits.Goodhabitsarethekeytoallsuess.Badhabitsaretheunlockeddoortofailure.Thus,thefirstlawIwillobey,whichprecedethallothersis--Iwillformgoodhabitsandbeetheirslave.
AsachildIwasslavetomyimpulses;nowIamslavetomyhabits,asareallgrownmen.Ihavesurrenderedmyfreewilltotheyearsofaumulatedhabitsandthepastdeedsofmylifehavealreadymarkedoutapathwhichthreatenstoimprisonmyfuture.Myactionsareruledbyappetite,passion,prejudice,greed,love,fear,environment,habit,andtheworstofthesetyrantsishabit.Therefore,ifImustbeaslavetohabitletmebeaslavetogoodhabits.Mybadhabitsmustbedestroyedandnewfurrowspreparedforgoodseed.
Iwillformgoodhabitsandbeetheirslave.
AndhowwillIaomplishthisdifficultfeat?
Throughthesescrolls,itwillbedone,foreachscrollcontainsaprinciplewhichwilldriveabadhabitfrommylifeandreplaceitwithonewhichwillbringmeclosertosuess.Foritisanotherofnature'slawsthatonlyahabitcansubdueanotherhabit.So,inorderforthesewrittenwordstoperformtheirchosentask,Imustdisciplinemyselfwiththefirstofmynewhabitswhichisasfollows:

First,IwillreadthewordsinsilencewhenIarise.Then,IwillreadthewordsinsilenceafterIhavepartakenofmymiddaymeal.Last,IwillreadthewordsagainjustbeforeIretireatday'send,andmostimportant,onthisoasionIwillreadthewordsaloud.
OnthenextdayIwillrepeatthisprocedure,andIwillcontinueinlikemannerforthirtydays.Then,Iwillturntothenextscrollandrepeatthisprocedureforanotherthirtydays.IwillcontinueinthismanneruntilIhavelivedwitheachscrollforthirtydaysandmyreadinghasbeehabit.
Andwhatwillbeaomplishedwiththishabit?
Hereinliesthehiddensecretofallman'saomplishments.AsIrepeatthewordsdailytheywillsoonbeeapartofmyactivemind,butmoreimportant,theywillalsoseepintomyothermind,thatmysterioussourcewhichneversleeps,whichcreatesmydreams,andoftenmakesmeactinwaysIdonotprehend.
AsthewordsofthesescrollsareconsumedbymymysteriousmindIwillbegintoawake,eachmorning,withavitalityIhaveneverknownbefore.Myvigorwillincrease,myenthusiasmwillrise,mydesiretomeettheworldwillovereeveryfearIonceknewatsunrise,andIwillbehappierthanIeverbelieveditpossibletobeinthisworldofstrifeandsorrow.
EventuallyIwillfindmyselfreactingtoallsituationswhichconfrontmeasIwasmandedinthescrollstoreact,andsoontheseactionsandreactionswillbeeeasytoperform,foranyactwithpracticebeeseasy.
Thusanewandgoodhabitisborn,forwhenanactbeeseasythroughconstantrepetitonitbeesapleasuretoperformandifitisapleasuretoperformitisman'snaturetoperformitoften.WhenIperformitoftenitbeesahabitandIbeeitsslaveandsinceitisagoodhabitthisismywill.
TodayIbeginanewlife.
AndImakeasolemnoathtomyselfthatnothingwillretardmynewlife'sgrowth.IwilllosenotadayfromthesereadingsforthatdaycannotberetrievednorcanIsubstituteanotherforit.Imustnot,Iwillnot,breakthishabitofdailyreadingfromthesescrollsand,intruth,thefewmomentsspenteachdayonthisnewhabitarebutasmallpricetopayforthehappinessandsuessthatwillbemine.
