There’sstilllotstolearnaboutplantreactionstotemperatures.“Wearejuststartingtounderstandhowplantsdetectthechangesintemperature...,”Quintsays.EarlierstudieshaveshownthattheproteinPIF4directlycontrolsplantgrowthandisalsodependentontemperature.Whenit’scold,PIF4islessactive,meaningtheplantdoesn’tgrow.Athighertemperatures,PIF4activatesgrowth-promotinggenes,andtheplantgrowstaller.Thisisnewinformation,saysQuint.
Tounderstandit,theyinvestigatedthegrowthofthalecress(Arabidopsisthaliana,拟南芥)seedlings.Normally,itsseedlingsformshortstems(茎)at20℃.Thesestemsbecomeconsiderablylongerat28℃.Theydiscoveredahormone(荷尔蒙)thatactivatesthePIF4athightemperatures,thusproducingtheprotein.ThefindingsoftheHallegroupmayhelptobreedplantsthatremainstableevenathightemperaturesandproducemanycrops.
