In1853,RussiainvadedTurkeyandBritainsenttheirsoldierstheretohelpTurkeydefeatRussianforces.TherewerealsomanyBritishsoldierswhohadgottencholeraandmalaria,andagreatnumberofsoldierswereinfectedwiththeillnesses.FlorenceNightingalethentook38nurseswithhertoTurkeyandwhenshearrivedthere,shenoticedthehospitalwasunsanitary(不卫生的)andthesoldierswerekeptinroomswithoutblanketsandqualityfood.
ThisinspiredFlorenceNightingaletoadvocatemoresanitaryconditionsinmilitaryhospitalsandbettertreatmentofsoldiers’healthproblems.Notsurprisingly,manymilitaryofficersanddoctorswereoffendedbyherclaimsandtheydidn’tdomuchtochangetheconditionsthere.Itwasn’tuntilFlorencewentpublicaboutthisissueinthepressthatshewasallowedtomakechangestothemilitaryhospitalinTurkey.
