Forcenturies,thegreatscientistsoftheworldstruggledtodevelopawaytolearnlongitude(经度).
Itseemedtothoseseekingtosolvethelongitudeproblemthattheonlysolutionwasinthemoonandstars.Duringthe17thcentury,Englishastronomersbeganamajorefforttomapthestarsandtheirrelationshiptothemoonasitpassedacrossthesky.RoyalAstronomerJohnFlamsteedworkedatthistaskforfortyyears.ThenextRoyalAstronomer,EdmundHailey,spentanotherfortyyearsgatheringinformationaboutthemoon’sorbit.In1766,RoyalAstronomerNevilMaskelynepublishedtheNauticalAlmanac(航海天文年历)andAstronomicalEphemeris(星历表).Itcontainedallthenecessaryinformationaboutthemoonandstarsthatsailorswouldneedtohelpthemlearntheirlongitude.Anavigatorhadtousecomplexobservinginstrumentstonotethepositionofthemoonandstars.ThenhehadtoseekthecorrectinformationintheNauticalAlmanacaboutthemoonandstarsatthattimeofnightorday.Thefinalstepintheprocesswastotakethemathematicalinformationfromthebook,linkittothecurrentinformationandsolvetheresultingproblem.Thistookanaverageoffourhourstodo.
