公共管理的研究生课程计划书

Coursedescription:
Althoughmostofusliveasamemberofanorganization-whetheritisprivate,public,ornonprofit-weoftenlackaclearsenseofwhattheylooklike,whattheydo,howtheydoit,andhowtoimprovethem.Behavioralphenomenainanorganizationalcontextareoftenelusive,becausethosearecloselyintertwinednotonlywithindividualcharacteristicsoforganizationalmemberssuchaspersonaltraitsandperceptualdifferencesbutalsowithgroupandorganizational-levelfactors,includingmotivationalscheme,groupdynamics,leadership,organizationalculture.Thisgraduate-levelcourseisdesignedtoprovide:
1)asetofframeworksandtoolsnecessarytoanalyzemultipledimensionsoforganizationaldynamicsinapublicsectorcontext;2)anopportunityforstudentstoapplylearnedtheoriesandconceptstoaddressingmanagerialissuesinapublicorganization.Morespecifically,thecourseisdesignedforfollowingobjectives.
∙Helpstudentstounderstandavarietyoffactorsthatcreatecomplexbehavioralphenomenaattheindividual,group,andorganizationallevel.
∙Helpcultivatestudents’abilitytocriticallyanalyzemanagerialandbehavioralproblemsinapublicorganizationanddeveloptheirownrecommendationstoaddresstheproblems.
∙Helpdevelopstudent’sskillstoeffectivelymanagerelationshipswithmanagers,peers,andemployeesinordertoachieveindividualandorganizationalgoals.

Foreachsession,youarerequiredtoprepareashortpaperthatidentifiesthekeyissuesintheassignedreadings.Youmustexaminecompetingalternativedefinitionsofaproblem,orcompetingalternativesolutionstoaproblem.Inaddition,youidentifyanddiscussbrieflyoneortwoissueswiththeircompetingalternativesanddevelopyourowncriticalanalysisandperspective(1-2pages,single-spaced:

Thisassignmentistofacilitateyourreflectivethinkingsothatyoucandrawontheinsightsfromthereadingstocreateeffectivesolutionstoaddressmanagerialissuesinanorganization.Asetofquestionswillbeprovidedinclass.Youwillberequiredtoselectoneofthemanddevelopyourthoughtfulargumentstoanswerthequestionbyintegratingthelearnedtheoriesandconcepts.(ashortpaperthatruns7-8pages,double-spaced:

Researchproposal.Forthisproposal,youaretopickatopicofinterestanddevelopaproposalforastudythatwouldcontributetotheliteratureinthisarea.Theproposalshouldreviewandintegrateexistingliteraturerelevanttothetopicsoastolayasolidtheoreticalfoundationthatsupportsthespecificationofoneormorehypothesesthatcouldfeasiblybestudied.(Ofcourse,itisnotnecessarytoactuallycarryoutthestudy.)Inwritingyourproposal,itisimportanttomakeitclearwhatthecontributionofthisstudywouldbe,including(butnotnecessarilylimitedto)howitwouldadvancetheliteratureonthetopic.Also,itisvaluabletofollowaformatsimilartothatusedinpublishedresearch.Therefore,whenreadingthematerialassignedforthecourse,especiallytheempiricalarticles,payattentiontothestyleofwritingandtheformatusedtolayoutthetheorybaseforthestudyandspecifytheresearchquestionsorhypotheses.
