ByresearchingsixUKnewspapersoverthepast10years,Demosfoundthatwordsmostcommonlyconnectedwith“teenagers”and“youngpeople”were“binge-drinking”,“yobs”and“crime”.
“Theyoungpeopleouttherearedoinggoodthingsforthecommunity,buttherearealwaysbadthingsonthenews.Butwe’renotalllikethat,it’sonlyafew,”saidBeckyBrunskill,18,memberofYouthParliamentforLiverpool.
Thesurveyalsofoundthat80%ofUKteenagersbelievedtheycaredmoreaboutsocialissuesthantheoldergeneration.Thiswasaviewsharedbytheirteachers,66%ofwhomagreedinaseparateDemossurveyof500teachers.
TheUKyoutharealsoeagertomakeadifference.Butratherthantraditionalpolitics,87%oftheteensbelievedsocialmediawasagoodwaytochangesociety.
