Ihavestoppedaskingmysontositdownandconcentrate.Obviously,heisconcentratingjustinhisownwayandnotmine.Weneedtolearntoacceptourkids’waysofdoingthings.Somewaymayhaveworkedformebutdoesn’tmeanweneedtocarryitthroughgenerations.Thereisnothingsweeterthanbeingindividualandunique.Itmakesusfreeandhappyandthat’sjustthewayIwantmykidstolivetheirownlife.

WritinginthejournalNatureCommunications,Fischerandhiscolleaguesarguethattheunstableclimatecontributedtothedisappearanceofichthyosaursduringa5-millionto6-million-yearwindowintheCretaceousknownastheCenomanianstage.
“Whiletherisingtemperaturesandthehigherseadidn’thadadirecteffectontheichthyosaurs,theycouldhaveplayedanindirectroleintheirdecline,”Fischersaid.“Thechangingclimatecouldhavemadetheirfoodmorescarce,ordisruptedmigratoryroutesandbirthingplaces,amongotherconsequences.”
Despitetheirvarietyofbodyshapesandsurvivalstrategies,ichthyosaurswereunabletokeepupwithallofthesechanges,thestudyauthorswrote.
TheyreachedthisconclusionbycomparingthegeologicalrecordoftheCretaceoustoanewlyreconstructedhistoryofichthyosaurevolutionbasedonmuseumspecimensandareviewofinformationinpreviouslypublishedstudies.
