1.0general
1.1Scope
Thisspecificationshallapplytothematerialsandinstallationofinsulationonpiping,heatexchangers,tanks,vesselsandotherequipment.
1.1.1Thisspecificationshallcoverinsulationfor:
∙HeatandColdConservationandTemperatureMaintenance
∙PreventionofCondensation
∙PersonnelProtection(surfacetemperatureis65°Candover)
1.1.2Thisspecificationdoesnotcoverthefollowinglightindustrialandcommercialapplications:
∙HVACRefrigerationpipingandductwork.
∙Thermalinsulationinbuildingwallsandroofs.
∙Fireproofingandrefractoryapplicationswherefireresistantqualitiesarerequired.
1.1.3TheInsulationManufacturer'sinstructionsandrecommendationsastothemethodofapplication,etc.,shallsupplementthisspecification.
1.2DefinitionofTerms
1.2.1Theword"Contractor"whenusedinthisStandardshallmeanthepartyidentifiedintheContractAgreement.IftheAgreementisaPurchaseOrder,thenContractorshallalsobeindicatetoasSeller.
1.2.2Theword"Owner"whenusedinthisspecificationshallmeanKoreaNationalOilCorporation(KNOC).IftheAgreementisaPurchaseOrder,thenOwnershallalsobereferredtoasBuyer.
1.3Conflictingrequirements
1.3.1InthecaseofconflictbetweenthisspecificationandotherdocumentsintheContractorPurchaseOrder,unlessspecificallystatedbytheorderasanexception,theSellershallnotifyOwnerinwritingandobtainawrittenrulingfromtheOwnerbeforeproceedingwiththeworkaffected.WhereCity,County,ProvincialorFederalcodesconflictwiththisspecification,themorerigidspecificationshallgovern.
2.0CODES,REGULATIONS&STANDARDS
Contractorshallmeetorexceedtherequirementsofthelatesteditionofthefollowingcodes,regulationsandstandards,exceptassupersededherein.Incaseswheremorethanonecode,regulationorstandardapplytothesamecondition,themoststringentshallbefollowed.

2.2OtherCodesandStandards
Contractorshallensurethattheequipmentcomplieswiththerequirementsofallfederal,provincialandregionalacts,regulationsandordinances.AnyrequiredgovernmentalapprovalsshallbetheContractor’sresponsibility.
3.0definitionsofinsulation
Thefollowingdesignationshallbeusedtoidentifyinsulationandtracingonalldrawings,linelists,andotherdocuments,unlessotherwisenoted.

AllinsulationtermsanddefinitionsshallbeinaccordancewithASTMC168
4.0materials
4.1General
4.1.1Allinsulationmaterialsshallbesuitableforthetemperatureandserviceapplicationwithoutmechanical,chemicalorthermaldegradationorfailure.
4.1.2Allsuppliedmaterialsshallbenewandundamaged.Materialsshallbeprotectedfromweatherandothersourcesofdamageduringstorageandinstallation.
4.1.3Insulatingandsealingmaterials,includingcements,coverings,etc.,shallnotcontainasbestosandshallbenoncombustible.
4.1.4MaterialsubstitutionsshallbeapprovedbyOwnerpriortosupplyandinstallation.
4.2Insulation
4.2.1Generally,forheatconservationorpersonnelprotection,fiberglass,mineralwool,urethane,aerogelorcalciumsilicateinsulationshallbeused.
4.2.2InsulationsystemsforundergroundordirectburialapplicationsshallbeapprovedbythePurchaser.Theinsulationincombinationwithcorrosionprotectivecoatingsshallprotectthecarrierpipefromcorrosiveeffectsofpenetratinggroundwater.
Thematerialselectedshall:
∙Beimpervioustomoisturepenetration
∙Notcorrodecarrierpipe
Generally,cellularglassshallbeusedforthispurposebutpouredinplacegranularinsulationorothersystemsmaybeusedsubjecttoapprovalbytheOwner.
4.2.3Calciumsilicateoraerogelshallbeusedinareasoffoottrafficandinareaswherethereisapossibilityofinsulationdamage,aswellasforsteamapplications.
4.2.4Fluidimperviousinsulationshallbeusedonequipmenthandlingmaterialswhicharesubjecttoautoignition.
4.2.5Whereinsulationatpipesupportpointsmustsupportpipeload,theinsulationshallbeoftheloadbearingtype.
4.2.6Expansionjointfillershallbemineralwoolorfiberglassfibrousloosefill.
4.2.7InsulationusedtocoverstainlesssteelshallcomplywithATSMC795andshallhavelessthan600mg/lofleachablechlorides,andgreaterthan20mg/lofsodiumsilicateforeachmg/lofchloride.
4.2.8Spray-onurethanefoaminsulationshallbeusedonlywithwrittenapprovalofthePurchaser.
4.2.9Allinsulationmaterialsshallhaveaflamespreadclassificationnottoexceed25whentestedinaccordancewithASTME84.
4.2.10Preformedinsulationshallbeusedforcoveringpipeandpipefittings.
4.2.11Rigidblockinsulationforcoveringtanks,heatexchangers,vesselsandequipmentisgenerallypreferred.Loosepackinsulationshallnotbeused.
4.3BarriersorCladding
4.3.1Weatherbarriersshallbeappliedforalloutdoorinsulationapplicationsandwhereinsulation/watercontactispossible.
4.3.2Allowablemetalsforbarriersarealuminum,stainlesssteelandgalvanizedsteel.GalvanizedsteelshallonlybeusedwithwrittenapprovalbyOwner.
4.3.3Stainlesssteelinsulationjacketingshallbeused:
∙Inregionswhereprobabilityofpunctureordamagetothebarrierexists.
∙Overanyinsulationintendedasfireproofing.
4.3.4Metalweatherbarriershallbeaccordingtothefollowingminimumthicknessesforthermalservice:
∙Aluminum-0.40mm(26gauge)
∙GalvanizedSteel-0.25mm(31gauge)priortogalvanizing
∙AusteniticStainlessSteel-0.25mm(31gauge)
Aluminumandgalvanizedsteelcladdingshallhaveafactoryinstalledintegralcondensatebarrier.Thealuminumcladdingshallbe0.4mmthickforpipingandequipmentofnominaldiameter914mmorless.Forpipingandequipmentgreaterthan914mmdiameter,thealuminumcladdingshallbe0.5mmthick.
4.3.5ExceptasnotedhereinorotherwiseapprovedbyOwner,claddingforpipingandhorizontalequipmentshallbesmoothorembossedaluminum.Claddingonverticalequipmentshallbecorrugatedaluminum.
4.4Sealants,MasticsandCements
4.4.1Appliedcoatingsofasphaltic(mastic)orelastomeric(butylRubber)materialsshallcomplywiththefollowing:
∙Aflamespreadclassificationofnotmorethan25asperASTME84.
∙Shallberesistanttosolarradiation.
4.4.2MasticsandcoatingsshallconformtoASTMC647.
4.4.3Masticsforcoldconservationserviceshallbevapourproof(nonbreathing).Masticsforheatconservationserviceshallbemoistureproof(breathing).
4.4.4ThermalinsulatingcementshallconformtoASTMC195.
4.4.5Caulkingforsealingweatherbarriersshallbenon-shrinking,permanentlyflexibleandcompatiblew
