Ifyou'vebeenpointedatthispage,thenthechancesareyou'rearelativelynewLinuxuserwho'shavingsomeproblemsmakingtheswitchfromWindowstoLinux.Thiscausesmanyproblemsformanypeople,hencethisarticlewaswritten.Manyindividualissuesarisefromthissingleproblem,sothepageisbrokendownintomultipleproblemareas.
Problem#1:
Linuxisn'texactlythesameasWindows.
You'dbeamazedhowmanypeoplemakethiscomplaint.TheycometoLinux,expectingtofindessentiallyafree,open-sourceversionofWindows.Quiteoften,thisiswhatthey'vebeentoldtoexpectbyover-zealousLinuxusers.However,it'saparadoxicalhope.
ThespecificreasonswhypeopletryLinuxvarywildly,buttheoverallreasonboilsdowntoonething:
TheyhopeLinuxwillbebetterthanWindows.Commonyardsticksformeasuringsuccessarecost,choice,performance,andsecurity.Therearemanyothers.ButeveryWindowsuserwhotriesLinux,doessobecausetheyhopeitwillbebetterthanwhatthey'vegot.
Thereinliestheproblem.
Itislogicallyimpossibleforanythingtobebetterthananyotherthingwhilstremainingcompletelyidenticaltoit.Aperfectcopymaybeequal,butitcanneversurpass.SowhenyougaveLinuxatryinhopesthatitwouldbebetter,youwereinescapablyhopingthatitwouldbedifferent.Toomanypeopleignorethisfact,andholdupeverydifferencebetweenthetwoOSesasaLinuxfailure.
Asasimpleexample,considerdriverupgrades:
onetypicallyupgradesahardwaredriveronWindowsbygoingtothemanufacturer'swebsiteanddownloadingthenewdriver;whereasinLinuxyouupgradethekernel.
ThismeansthatasingleLinuxdownload&upgradewillgiveyouthenewestdriversavailableforyourmachine,whereasinWindowsyouwouldhavetosurftomultiplesitesanddownloadalltheupgradesindividually.It'saverydifferentprocess,butit'scertainlynotabadone.Butmanypeoplecomplainbecauseit'snotwhatthey'reusedto.
Or,asanexampleyou'remorelikelytorelateto,considerFirefox:
Oneofthebiggestopen-sourcesuccessstories.Awebbrowserthattooktheworldbystorm.DiditachievethissuccessbybeingaperfectimitationofIE,thethen-most-popularbrowser?
No.ItwassuccessfulbecauseitwasbetterthanIE,anditwasbetterbecauseitwasdifferent.Ithadtabbedbrowsing,livebookmarks,built-insearchbar,PNGsupport,adblockextensions,andotherwonderfulthings.The"Find"functionalityappearedinatoolbaratthebottomandlookedformatchesasyoutyped,turningredwhenyouhadnomatch.IEhadnotabs,noRSSfunctionality,searchbarsonlyviathird-partyextensions,andafinddialoguethatrequiredaclickon"OK"tostartlookingandaclickon"OK"toclearthe"Notfound"errormessage.Aclearandinarguabledemonstrationofanopen-sourceapplicationachievingsuccessbybeingbetter,andbeingbetterbybeingdifferent.HadFFbeenan IEclone,itwouldhavevanishedintoobscurity.AndhadLinuxbeenaWindowsclone,thesamewouldhavehappened.
Sothesolutiontoproblem#1:
RememberthatwhereLinuxisfamiliarandthesameaswhatyou'reusedto,itisn'tnew&improved.Welcometheplaceswherethingsaredifferent,becauseonlyheredoesithaveachancetoshine.
Problem#2:
LinuxistoodifferentfromWindows
ThenextissueariseswhenpeopledoexpectLinuxtobedifferent,butfindthatsomedifferencesarejusttooradicalfortheirliking.ProbablythebiggestexampleofthisisthesheeramountofchoiceavailabletoLinuxusers.Whereasanout-of-the-box-WindowsuserhastheClassicorXPdesktopwithWordpad,InternetExplorer,andOutlookExpressinstalled,anout-of-the-box-Linuxuserhashundredsofdistrostochoosefrom,thenGnomeorKDEorFluxboxorwhatever,withvioremacsorkate,KonquerororOperaorFirefoxorMozilla,andsoonandsoforth.
AWindowsuserisn'tusedtomakingsomanychoicesjusttogetup&running.Exasperated"Doestherehavetobesomuchchoice?

DoesLinuxreallyhavetobesodifferentfromWindows?
Afterall,they'rebothoperatingsystems.Theybothdothesamejob:

Quitetrue.Butdidyounotseethatsomepeopleweren'tdrivingcars,butwereridingmotorbikesinstead..?
SwitchingfromoneversionofWindowstoanotherislikeswitchingfromonecartoanother.Win95toWin98,Ihonestlycouldn'ttellthedifference.Win98toWinXP,itwasabiggerchangebutreallynothingmajor.
ButswitchingfromWindowstoLinuxislikeswitchingfromacartoamotorbike.TheymaybothbeOSes/roadvehicles.Theymaybothusethesamehardware/roads.Theymaybothprovideanenvironmentforyoutorunapplications/transportyoufromAtoB.Buttheyusefundamentallydifferentapproachestodoso.
Windows/carsarenotsafefromviruses/theftunlessyouinstallanantivirus/lockthedoors.Linux/motorbikesdon'thaveviruses/doors,soareperfectlysafewithoutyouhavingtoinstallanantivirus/lockanydoors.
Orlookatittheotherwayround:

Cardriversdon'thavetowearcrashhelmets,motorbikedriversdon'thavetoputonaseatbelt.Cardrivershavetoturnthesteeringwheeltogetaroundacorner,motorbikedrivershavetoleanover.Cardriversacceleratebypushingafoot-pedal,motorbikedriversacceleratebytwistingahandcontrol.
Amotorbikedriverwhotriestocorneracarbyleaningoverisgoingtorunintoproblemsveryquickly.AndWindowsuserswhotrytousetheirexistingskillsandhabitsgenerallyalsofindthemselveshavingmanyissues.Infact,Windows"PowerUsers"frequentlyhavemoreproblemswithLinuxthanpeoplewithlittleornocomputerexperience,forthisveryreason.Typically,themostvehement"Linuxisnotreadyforthedesktopyet"argumentscomefromingrainedWindowsuserswhoreasonthatiftheycouldn'tmaketheswitch,aless-experienceduserhasnochance.Butthisistheexactoppositeofthetruth.

Theypayforsoftware,forwarranties,forsupport,andsoon.Theyexpectsoftwaretohaveacertainlevelofusability.Theyarethereforeusedtohavingrightswiththeirsoftware:
Theyhavepaidfortechnicalsupportandhaveeveryrighttodemandthattheyreceiveit.Theyarealsousedtodealingwithentitiesratherthanpeople:
Theircontractsarewithacompany,notwithaperson.
Linuxusersareinmoreofacommunity.Theydon'thavetobuythesoftware,theydon'thavetopayfortechnicalsupport.Theydownloadsoftwareforfree&useInstantMessagingandweb-basedforumstogethelp.Theydealwithpeople,notcorporations.
AWindowsuserwillnotendearhimselfbybringinghishabitual attitudesovertoLinux,toputitmildly.
Thebiggestcauseoffrictiontendstobeintheonlineinteractions:
A"3a"usernewtoLinuxasksforhelpwithaproblemhe'shaving.Whenhedoesn'tgetthathelpatwhatheconsidersanacceptablerate,hestartscomplaininganddemandingmorehelp.Becausethat'swhathe'susedtodoingwithpaid-fortechsupport.Theproblem isthatthisisn'tpaid-forsupport.Thisisabunchofvolunteerswhoarewillingtohelppeoplewithproblemsoutofthegoodnessoftheirhearts.Thenewuserhasnorighttodemandanythingfromthem,anymorethansomebodycollectingforcharitycandemandlargerdonationsfromcontributors.
Inmuchthesameway,aWindowsuserisusedtousingcommercialsoftware.Companiesdon'treleasesoftwareuntilit'sreliable,functional,anduser-friendlyenough.SothisiswhataWindowsusertendstoexpectfromsoftware:
