AndrewCarnegiewasa19thcenturysteelgaintwhobecameoneofthe20thcentury’smostfamousphilanthropists(慈善家).Hislifestoryisoneofthemostfamousrags-to-richesaccountsinUnitedStates’history.

Manypeopleofwealthhavecontributedtocharity,butCarnegiewasperhapsthefirsttostatepubliclythattherichhaveamoralobligationtogiveawaytheirfortunes.In1889hewroteTheGospel(福音)ofWealth,inwhichhenotedthatallpersonalwealthbeyondwhatwasrequiredtosupplytheneedsofone’sfamilyshouldberegardedasatrustfund(信托基金)tobeadministeredforthebenefitofthecommunity.
Carnegiesetaboutgivingawayhisfortunethroughcountlesspersonalgiftsandthroughtheestablishmentofvarioustrusts.Inhisthirties,Carnegiehadalreadybeguntogiveawaysomeofhisfast-accumulatingfunds.Hisfirstlargegiftsweremadetohisnativetown.LaterhecreatedsevenphilanthropicandeducationalorganizationsintheUnitedStates,includingCarnegieCorporationofNewYork,andseveralmoreinEurope.
OneofCarnegie’slifelonginterestswastheestablishmentoffreepubliclibrariestomakeavailabletoeveryoneasameansofself-education.Therewereonlyafewpubliclibrariesintheworld,in1881,whenCarnegiebegantopromotehisidea.HeandtheCorporationspentover$56milliontobuild2,509librariesthroughouttheEnglish-speakingworld.
Afterthisprogramwasendedin1917,theCorporationcontinuedforaboutfortyyearsaninterestintheimprovementoflibraryservices.OthermajorprogramsintheCorporation’searlyhistoryincludedadulteducationandeducationinthefinearts.
