WalterMacken,thefamousnovelist,playwrightandactor,wasborninGalwayin1915.Hefirstbegantowriteattheageofeight.HejoinedtheTaibhdhearcin1934,whilestillattendingschool.
Itwastherethathemethiswife,PeggyKenny,whowasthenanewseditor.Theyfellinlove,butherfather,TomCorkKennydidn’tapproveofPeggy’schoice,sotheyhadtoelope(私奔)andweremarriedinFairviewChurchinDublinonFebruary9th,1937.TheywenttoLondonwhereheworkedasaninsuranceagent,sellinginsurancedoortodoor,ashelaterwroteaboutinIAmAlone.
ReturningtoGalwayin1939,WaltertookupthepostoftheatremanagerwiththeTaibhdhearc.Atthistime,hebegantowritebothinIrishandEnglish.By1946hisfirstplayinEnglish,Mungo’sMansion,hadbeensuccessfullystagedattheAbbeyTheatreinDublin,andhisfirstnovel,QuenchtheMoon,hadbeenacceptedforpublication.In1948hewasintheAbbeyforthreeyears.
In1950histhirdnovel,RainontheWind,broughthiminternationalrecognition,winningtheBookoftheMonthClubandtheLiteraryGuildAward.AsuccessfulUStheatretourgavehimtheimpetus(动力)toreturnhometoGalwaytoestablishacareerforhimselfasafulltimewriter.
Inall,heproducedabodyofworkwhichfinallycametotennovels,sevenplays,threebooksofshortstoriesandtwochildren’sbooks.Mostofhisnovelshavebeentranslatedintomanylanguages.Hislastnovel,BrownLordoftheMountain,waspublishedjustbeforehisdeathonApril22,1967.
