Inthe1880s,MarkTwainmanagedhisownpublishingcompany.Healsobecameinterestedinvariousinvestments(投资),especiallyakindoftypesettingmachine.Helostalmost$200,000ininvestmentsinthemachinebetween1881and1894.Also,hispublishingcompanydeclaredbankruptcy(破产)inApril1894.Thus,inJanuary1895,MarkTwainfoundhimselfpubliclyshamedbyhisinabilitytopayhisdebts.

Althoughhewasrecoveringfromhisfinancialproblemsby1898,MarkTwainhadbeguntoexperiencetragedy(悲剧)inhispersonallife.Suzy,hisoldestdaughter,diedofmeningitis(脑膜炎)in1896,whileherparentsandsisterClarawereabroad.In1903,MarkTwainsoldthebelovedhouseinHartford,whichhadbecometoocloselyassociatedwithSuzy’sdeath.Hiswife,Olivia,whohaddevelopedaheartcondition,diedonJune5,1904.Hisyoungestdaughter,Jean,diedonDec.24,1909.
